Chapter 6 - The Fall of Donna Carter

With Brian facing impending criminal charges and legally barred from approaching me or Lily, Donna Carter realized her world was rapidly crumbling. But instead of quietly retreating, her arrogance drove her to make one final, desperate play.

Two weeks after the court hearing, I was at my firm’s downtown office. After taking back control of my father's trust, I had fully stepped into my role as the executive director of the Montgomery Foundation, an organization dedicated to funding pediatric health initiatives and supporting survivors of domestic violence.

My assistant, Clara, buzzed my desk. "Sarah, there's a woman named Donna Carter downstairs in the lobby. She's demanding to see you. Security is holding her, but she's causing a massive scene in front of the board members."

I leaned back in my leather chair, taking a slow breath. A few weeks ago, the thought of facing Donna’s wrath would have made my stomach twist in knots. Now? It felt like dealing with a minor inconvenience.

"Send her up, Clara," I said calmly. "And call building security to stand outside my office door."

Five minutes later, Donna stormed into my executive suite. She was no longer wearing her expensive designer clothes; her hair was unstyled, and her eyes were wild with desperation and fury.

"You think you're so clever, don't you?!" Donna screamed, slamming her purse onto my desk. "You ruined my son! He was arrested this morning at his apartment! The FBI took him in for bank fraud! They frozen my personal accounts too!"

I didn't flinch. I sat quietly, watching her rage with cold detachment.

"Brian was facing charges the moment he chose to forge my signature, Donna," I replied evenly. "And your accounts were frozen because you were listed as the primary beneficiary of the offshore shell company in the Caymans. Did you really think federal investigators wouldn't track the money back to you?"

Donna’s cheeks flushed crimson. "I am his mother! I spent my whole life building his future! You were just supposed to be a dutiful wife! You were supposed to support his family!"

"Support his family?" I laughed softly, a bitter smile touching my lips. "You treated me like an unpaid housekeeper. You belittled my work, you humiliated me in front of your friends, and when my child was screaming in pain, you told me I was causing 'unnecessary drama' because you wanted a dinner party."

"She had a cold!" Donna yelled defensively.

"She had a severe infection that almost caused a seizure!" I slammed my hands on the desk, standing up. My voice echoed through the high-ceilinged office, sharp and commanding. "You put your social vanity above my daughter’s life! You encouraged your son to strike me! And now you stand in my office blaming me for the consequences of your own greed!"

Donna took a step back, startled by the fierce authority in my voice. She had never seen me like this. She was used to the timid, quiet Sarah who apologized for things she didn't do just to keep the peace.

At that moment, the office door opened. Two plainclothes detectives stepped inside, accompanied by building security.

"Donna Carter?" one of the detectives asked, pulling a gold badge from his jacket pocket.

Donna spun around, her eyes wide with terror. "Who are you?!"

"Detective Miller, State Financial Crimes Task Force," he announced calmly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and aiding in the falsification of legal documents."

"What?!" Donna shrieked, backing away toward my window. "No! You can't arrest me! I didn't sign anything! It was all Brian!"

"We have the text messages, Mrs. Carter," Detective Miller said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "We have the bank transfers from your account to Evelyn Reed, and we have the recorded statements from your son's former business partner. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the detective snapped the metal cuffs around Donna’s wrists, she turned her head toward me, tears of panic streaming down her wrinkled face.

"Sarah! Please!" she sobbed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Talk to Marcus! You can drop the charges! We're family!"

May you like

I looked at the woman who had spent five years trying to break my spirit, the woman who had watched her son slap me with a smile on her face.

"We were never family, Donna," I said quietly as the officers led her away. "You were just a predator who picked the wrong target."
