Part 2: The Truth Inside the Ultrasound Room

Dr. Salinas didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to.
“Mr. Michael,” she said, her eyes still fixed on the glowing screen, “before you continue insulting your wife… you need to take a very close look at what is appearing right here.”
Michael scoffed. “I’ve already seen enough. She’s pregnant with someone else’s—”
“Sit down,” the doctor interrupted sharply.
The room went silent in a way that felt heavier than shouting.
Even Ashley stopped breathing for a second.
Reluctantly, Michael stepped closer to the monitor.
“What am I looking at?” he muttered.
Dr. Salinas adjusted the angle slightly.
Then she pointed.
“There,” she said.
A second shape appeared beside the first heartbeat.
Not a shadow.
Not an error.
Another flicker of life.
Michael blinked. “What… is that?”
Ashley’s voice cracked for the first time. “That’s not possible.”
Dr. Salinas turned slowly toward them.
“It is possible,” she said. “Because there are two embryos. This is a twin pregnancy.”
The words didn’t land immediately.
Then they did.
My hands flew to my stomach. “Twins?”
The doctor nodded gently. “Yes. Two fetuses. Two heartbeats. Both healthy.”
Michael laughed once—confused, broken, angry. “No. No, that’s not— I had a vasectomy.”
Dr. Salinas didn’t hesitate.
“A vasectomy reduces fertility. It does not guarantee absolute sterility, especially without follow-up testing confirming zero sperm count.”
She paused.
Then added the sentence that drained all color from his face:
“And based on the timing here… conception likely occurred before your procedure fully took effect.”
The room went still.
Ashley slowly pulled her hand away from the door.
Michael looked at me, but for the first time since this nightmare began… there was doubt in his eyes.
“You’re saying…” he whispered.
“I’m saying,” the doctor replied, “that these children are consistent with your timeline, Mr. Michael.”
The word children hit like a hammer.
Not child.
Children.
I exhaled shakily, tears spilling again—but this time not from humiliation.
From relief.
Michael stepped back as if the floor had shifted under him.
“I… I didn’t know,” he said quietly.
Ashley’s face tightened. “Michael, you said—”
“I said what I believed,” he snapped, but weaker now.
For the first time, he didn’t look at me like an enemy.
May you like
He looked at me like someone he had almost destroyed by mistake.
And that changed everything.
