Chapter 5 - Exposing the Truth

Two weeks after the incident, the Bennett family attempted to launch a smear campaign against me.

Brooke posted a long, tearful video on social media claiming that her 'wealthy, arrogant sister-in-law' had kicked an elderly couple out into the freezing cold on New Year's Day over a minor argument, framing me as a ruthless career woman who cared more about money than family. The video began gaining traction among Ryan’s extended relatives and local social circles.

My inbox began filling with nasty messages from aunts, uncles, and family friends I had barely met, calling me a monster and demanding I drop the charges against Grant.

“How dare you humiliate Grant like this?” one aunt wrote. “He is a proud man!”

“Ryan gave you everything, and you throw him away because of your huge ego,” a family friend commented.

I didn't engage in an online shouting match. Instead, I let my legal team handle the response.

Marcus sent a formal cease-and-desist letter to Brooke, warning her that continuing to spread false narratives would result in an immediate defamation lawsuit with substantial damages. Attached to the letter was a single frame from the penthouse security footage: a clear, high-definition image showing Grant holding the lit cigarette to my pregnant sweater while Ryan held my arms, with Diane and Brooke sitting calmly in the background.

The letter explicitly stated: “If the video footage is brought to light during public court proceedings, it will become a matter of public record available to all news outlets.”

Within two hours, Brooke’s social media video was deleted.

The next day, Diane called me from an unblocked number, her tone completely changed from her previous arrogance.

“Claire... dear,” Diane began, her voice shaking with forced affection. “I’m calling woman to woman. Mother to mother.”

“Speak, Diane,” I said, sitting at my desk in my penthouse, which was now quiet, serene, and completely restored to order.

“Grant is... he’s not doing well in detention,” she whimpered. “His blood pressure is high. The lawyers say he’s facing actual jail time for felony assault on a pregnant person. Claire, he’s an old man. He made a mistake. He was raised in a different time where men were the undisputed authority. Can’t you find it in your heart to forgive him? For the sake of the baby? She needs her grandfather.”

“My daughter does not need a grandfather who uses violence to establish authority,” I replied calmly. “Nor does she need a grandmother who watches silently while her mother is assaulted.”

“I was terrified!” Diane claimed defensively. “You know how Grant gets when he drinks!”

“You were sitting there with a glass of wine in your hand, Diane,” I said, remembering the image vividly. “You didn't even drop your glass. You enjoyed watching me get put in my place because you were jealous that I had everything you spent your life wishing your husband could provide for you.”

Diane went completely silent. The truth had hit home.

“Listen to me carefully, Diane,” I continued. “Grant’s trial is set for next month. I will testify. I will present the medical reports, the sweater, and the full video recording. Ryan will also be subpoenaed. If you want to save what little dignity your family has left, I suggest Grant take a plea bargain.”

“He won't survive prison,” Diane whispered, genuine fear in her voice.

“Then he should have thought about that before he pressed a burning cigarette into a pregnant woman,” I said, and hung up the phone.
