Chapter 6 - Confessions in the Dark

The interrogation room at the Metro Nashville Police Precinct was cold and sterile, illuminated by buzzing fluorescent lights. Through the one-way mirror, Brandon and I stood alongside Detective Chen, watching Julian Vance sit slouched in a metal chair, his expensive designer suit crumpled, his hair disheveled.

Across from him sat his criminal defense attorney, but Julian was too terrified to stay quiet.

"It wasn't my idea!" Julian stammered, his hands trembling as he gestured wildly. "It was Madeline! She planned the whole thing! She’s been losing money on the commercial properties for five years! If the trust passed to Luke next month, the bank records would be unsealed. We would have gone to prison for fraud!"

"Tell us about the poison, Mr. Vance," Detective Chen’s partner, Detective Miller, said calmly from across the table.

"Madeline had the medication," Julian blurted out, ignoring his lawyer’s frantic tug on his sleeve. "She told me to dissolve it into the blackberry sauce while Claire was inside getting napkins. It was supposed to look like a severe allergic reaction or a sudden cardiac arrest when Brandon ate it! Brandon was supposed to take the first serving!"

"Why did your mother kick the bowl out of the child's hands?" Detective Miller asked.

"Because she realized the kid was taking the poisoned piece to her!" Julian yelled, leaning forward. "Luke carried that specific bowl to Madeline! Madeline knew if she ate it, or if the kid ate more of it, the whole plan would collapse right there on the patio! She panicked! She kicked the bowl to keep herself from being poisoned by her own trap!"

I gasped, pressing my hand over my mouth. Madeline hadn't kicked the bowl out of pure disdain for my son—she had kicked it out of sheer terror because she realized her own toxic creation was being offered to her by an innocent four-year-old child.

"What about the DNA results?" Detective Chen asked through the intercom microphone. "Why did the initial hospital scan show a genetic mismatch between Brandon and Luke?"

Julian lowered his head, staring at the metallic tabletop. A deep, pathetic sob escaped his throat.

"Madeline paid off a lab technician at the hospital four years ago," Julian confessed softly. "She wanted a falsified record stored in the system as a backup plan. If Brandon ever tried to leave the family business or if he ever tried to claim the trust early, she was going to use that fake record to claim Claire had been unfaithful and strip Luke of his inheritance."

"And the genetic marker the hospital found today?" I asked, looking at Detective Chen.

"The preliminary scan at Vanderbilt picked up a false flag because of the organophosphate toxicity in Luke's system," Chen explained, turning to us. "The chemical compound temporarily distorted the blood chemistry markers during the automated rapid sequence. The official crime lab DNA results just came back fifteen minutes ago."

Detective Chen pulled a sealed envelope from her folder and handed it to Brandon.

Brandon’s hands trembled as he tore open the seal. He pulled out the paper and scanned the bold text at the bottom of the page:

PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.999% SUBJECT: BRANDON VANCE IS THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF LUKE VANCE.

Brandon dropped the paper and covered his face with his hands, weeping openly. The doubt, the agony, the dark cloud that had hovered over our family since yesterday afternoon vanished into the morning air.

"He's your son, Brandon," I whispered, wrapping my arms around his waist. "He always was."

"I'm sorry," Brandon sobbed, holding me tight. "I'm so sorry I ever let a single second of doubt enter my mind. I'm so sorry, Claire."

"It's over," I told him, looking through the mirror at the man who had tried to destroy our lives. "It's finally over."
