Part 2: The Longest Night of Connor Hayes

The waiting room had never felt so small.

Connor Hayes sat alone beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, staring at the red glow above the operating room doors.

Surgery in Progress.

Minutes stretched into hours.

For a man who had spent his entire life controlling outcomes, negotiating impossible deals, and commanding absolute loyalty, the helplessness was unbearable.

Logan approached carefully.

“Boss.”

Connor didn't look up.

“Any updates?”

“No.”

Silence followed.

Then Logan spoke again.

“I've known you fifteen years.”

Connor finally lifted his head.

“And?”

“I've never seen you scared before.”

Connor laughed bitterly.

“Neither have I.”

Across the room, Isabella stood with folded arms.

At first she had demanded answers.

Now she simply looked disappointed.

“Was she your ex?” Isabella asked.

Connor nodded.

“The one you never talk about?”

“Yes.”

“The one you never got over?”

Connor couldn't answer.

Because for the first time he realized the truth.

He had never stopped loving Emily.

Not for a single day.

He had buried the feeling beneath work, power, and endless distractions.

But seeing her on that gurney had ripped away every lie he told himself.

Three hours later, a doctor finally emerged.

Connor was already on his feet.

The doctor looked exhausted.

“Emily Parker's family?”

Nobody moved.

Connor stepped forward.

“I... I'm not family.”

The doctor hesitated.

Then sighed.

“She made it through surgery.”

Connor nearly collapsed with relief.

“But she suffered severe complications.”

The doctor's expression darkened.

“She experienced heart failure during labor. We stabilized her, but the next twenty-four hours are critical.”

Connor swallowed hard.

“And the baby?”

A small smile appeared on the doctor's face.

“A little girl.”

The world stopped.

A daughter.

His daughter.

Tears burned unexpectedly behind his eyes.

The doctor continued.

“She is healthy and stable in the NICU for observation.”

Connor closed his eyes.

Healthy.

Alive.

Both of them alive.

For now.

Then the doctor said something that shattered him.

“Emily listed no emergency contact.”

Connor's chest tightened.

No family.

No husband.

Nobody.

She had gone through all of this alone.

Because he had left.

That realization hurt more than anything.

Hours later, after everyone else had gone home, Connor quietly walked toward the nursery viewing window.

Rows of newborns slept beneath soft lights.

A nurse pointed toward a tiny bassinet.

“There she is.”

Connor stepped closer.

The baby was impossibly small.

Tiny fingers.

Tiny nose.

Dark hair.

And when she stretched in her sleep, Connor saw his own eyes.

His knees almost gave out.

For the first time in his life, Connor Hayes understood what real fear was.

Not fear of enemies.

Not fear of prison.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of losing someone he loved.

And standing there, staring at his daughter through the glass, he made a promise.

If Emily survived...

He would spend the rest of his life earning forgiveness.
