Chapter 4 - The Fire and the Vow

The night was long and agonizing. Claire stayed in Lily's bedroom, holding the little girl as a fierce blizzard howled outside, battering the glass windows of the mansion. Every creak of the estate made her heart race. She didn't know the full extent of Adrian’s past, but she knew the O'Malley family was an old rival syndicate from South Boston—men who had refused to transition into legitimate business and resented Adrian for turning his back on the old ways.

At 4:00 AM, the low rumble of dark SUVs echoed up the long driveway. Claire watched from behind the thick velvet curtains as five vehicles pulled up to the main courtyard. Adrian stepped out of the lead vehicle. Even from the third floor, she could see blood staining the cuff of his white shirt, though he walked with the steady, unimpeded stride of a king returning to his castle.

Unable to stop herself, Claire crept out of the room, leaving the sleeping child under Mrs. Gable's quiet watch in the hallway, and hurried down the grand staircase.

She found Adrian in his private office adjoining the study. Frank was wrapping a thick white bandage around Adrian’s upper left arm. The room smelled faintly of gunpowder, snow, and copper.

"You're hurt!" Claire cried out, rushing forward, her medical instincts entirely overriding her fear.

"It's just a graze, Claire," Adrian said smoothly, but his voice carried a raw fatigue.

"Let me look at it," she demanded, gently pushing Frank aside. Frank looked at Adrian, surprised, but Adrian gave a faint nod, allowing the security chief to step back and leave the room.

Claire took over the medical supplies with practiced, effortless skill. She unwrapped the bloody bandage, her soft hands light and precise as she inspected the clean furrow the bullet had carved into his bicep. She cleaned the wound with antiseptic, her face inches from his chest. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, could hear the steady, strong rhythm of his pulse.

"You shouldn't be down here," Adrian whispered, watching her intensely as she carefully sutured the skin.

"And you shouldn't be getting shot at," Claire countered, her voice shaking slightly as she tied off the stitch. "Who are these people, Adrian? Why are they doing this?"

"Old ghosts," Adrian said quietly. "Seamus O'Malley thinks that because I chose a legal path for my daughter's future, I've grown soft. He thinks he can take my shipping lines, my docks, my power." His hand rose, his fingers curling gently around her chin, forcing her to look up from his arm into his dark, burning eyes. "He made a mistake tonight. He tried to use my family as leverage."

"What do you mean?"

"They had a man inside the grounds, Claire. He was sent to take Lily."

Claire felt the blood drain entirely from her face. She swayed slightly, horror choking her throat. "What?"

"Frank caught him at the perimeter gate before he reached the house," Adrian said, his grip on her chin firming, keeping her anchored. "It's over now. The mole is gone. The O'Malleys have been dealt with permanently. But it reminded me of something dangerous."

"What?" Claire whispered, her lips inches from his.

"It reminded me that I have things in this house that I cannot afford to lose," Adrian said softly. His eyes dropped to her lips, then rose back to her eyes. "My daughter loves you, Claire. She smiles because of you. She sleeps because of you." He paused, his breath warm against her cheek. "And I am beginning to realize that I cannot breathe in this house when you are not in the room."

Claire’s heart slammed against her ribs. "Adrian... I'm just the nanny. I'm heavy, I'm quiet, I have a broken past..."

"You are everything this house was missing," Adrian interrupted fiercely. "You are grace. You are warmth. You are the only person who looked at me and didn't see a paycheck or a monster."

Slowly, carefully, giving her every chance to pull away, Adrian leaned in. His lips pressed against hers in a slow, deep, possessive kiss that consumed every doubt, every fear, and every insecurity Claire had ever carried. When he pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his breath ragged.

"I will protect you, Claire," he promised softly. "From your past, from mine, and from anyone who tries to hurt what is ours."
