Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Morning broke over the Pacific Northwest not with sunlight, but with a soft, misty gray horizon. Inside the Maddox estate, however, the warmth was palpable.
Julian was already up by 5:00 AM. By the time 7:00 AM rolled around, three of the city’s top pediatricians, a private tailor, and Julian’s personal legal team had been summoned to the house. When Emily woke up, she found a plush leather armchair near her bed stacked with brand-new, high-end children's clothing, soft cashmere sweaters in her size, and warm leather boots.
Downstairs in the sunroom, Lila was sitting on a plush rug, thoroughly enchanted by a giant stuffed bear that Julian’s assistant had rushed over at dawn. She was wearing a tiny yellow cardigan, her blonde curls freshly brushed, happily munching on pancakes loaded with fresh berries.
Julian sat across from her, a cup of coffee in hand, watching her with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe. He saw his late mother in the subtle curve of Lila’s smile, and he saw himself in the sharp, observant gaze of her blue eyes.
"More berries, Mr. Julian?" Lila asked politely, holding up a tiny strawberry with her fork.
Julian’s heart melted into a puddle. "No thank you, sweetie. Those are all for you."
Emily entered the sunroom softly, wearing one of the dark blue cashmere sweaters. She looked vastly different from the broken woman who had collapsed on his doorstep twelve hours ago, though the hollows beneath her cheekbones still bore the marks of years of hardship.
"Julian... this is too much," Emily said softly, gesturing toward the clothes, the spread of food, and the pediatrician currently waiting respectfully in the living room. "You don't have to buy us a new life in one morning."
"I have seven years of lost time to make up for," Julian said, standing up and drawing out a chair for her. "The doctor is just here for a routine checkup. I want to make sure Lila's fever is completely gone and that you receive a full medical evaluation after everything your body has been through."
"Julian, my health is fine now, the cancer has been in remission for five years—"
"And we are going to keep it that way," he interrupted gently, but firmly. "Please, Emily. Let me do this."
Before Emily could respond, the heavy front doors opened, and footsteps echoed down the grand corridor. Entering the sunroom without announcement was a man in an expensive charcoal suit, carrying a leather briefcase. It was Richard Vance, Julian’s long-time business partner and co-founder of Maddox Global Enterprises.
Richard stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Emily sitting at the table. His complexion paled instantly, his eyes widening in what looked less like surprise and more like pure terror.
"Emily?" Richard breathed, his voice tight. "What... what are you doing here?"
Emily turned, and the moment her eyes met Richard’s, her shoulders tensed. A cold, visible wave of discomfort washed over her. "Hello, Richard."
Julian looked between the two of them, his sharp instincts immediately picking up on the sudden, toxic shift in the atmosphere. "You look like you've seen a ghost, Richard."
"I... well, yes," Richard stammered, quickly recovering his composure and adjusting his silk tie. "Julian, we have the board meeting in two hours regarding the European expansion. I came to pick up the signed contracts. I certainly didn't expect to find... your ex-girlfriend in your breakfast room."
"Emily isn't just my ex-girlfriend, Richard," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet tone as he stepped between Richard and the table. "She is staying here. With our daughter."
Richard’s eyes flicked to Lila, then back to Emily. A strange, flicking shadow of resentment passed across his face before he carefully smoothed it over with a practiced, corporate smile. "Your daughter? Julian, are you sure about this? You haven't seen this woman in seven years. She vanished without a trace, and now she suddenly reappears on your doorstep claiming a child is yours just as your firm is reaching a forty-billion-dollar valuation? Don't you think the timing is a bit... suspicious?"
"Richard, shut up," Julian said cold, hard authority radiating from him.
"I'm just looking out for you, as your partner!" Richard insisted, stepping closer. "You're an emotional man when it comes to her. We have a massive deal closing this week. A public scandal or a fraudulent paternity claim could tank our stock!"
"She didn't come here asking for money, Richard. She came here starving," Julian snapped, his knuckles turning white as he held back his temper. "And if you ever speak about her or my daughter in that tone again, you won't have a seat on my board by nightfall."
Richard clenched his jaw, swallowing his pride, but the glare he directed at Emily was laced with venom. "I'll wait in the study for the contracts, Julian." He turned on his heel and walked out.
Emily slumped back in her chair, trembling slightly. Julian immediately turned back to her, kneeling beside her seat. "Hey. Ignore him. Richard has always been obsessed with the bottom line. He doesn't matter."
"Julian..." Emily whispered, her voice shaking as she stared at the doorway where Richard had vanished. "There's something you don't know."
Julian frowned. "What do you mean?"
Emily looked around, ensuring Lila was engrossed in her toys on the carpet, before lowering her voice to a panicked whisper. "Seven years ago... the week I found out I was pregnant and sick... I didn't just decide to leave on my own."
Julian’s breath hitched. "What are you talking about?"
"The night before I left," Emily said, her eyes brimming with tears of long-suppressed fear. "Richard came to my apartment. He brought medical records—my medical records. He told me he knew about the cancer and the baby. He said if I stayed, I would ruin your IPO. He said you were already overwhelmed, and that if I forced you to choose, you would sacrifice the company and hate me forever for making you fail."

Julian felt as though the floor beneath him had opened up. "Richard came to you?"
"He paid for my initial train ticket out of the state," Emily sobbed softly. "He told me that if I ever tried to contact you, he would ensure your board ousted you for gross negligence and that he would use his legal team to take the baby away from me the moment it was born, claiming I was medically unfit. I was terrified, Julian. I was young, sick, broke, and entirely alone. He made me promise to disappear forever."
