Chapter 10 - The Bright Horizon

The wedding of Claire Bennett and Marcus Ellison took place the following June, exactly two years after the day that changed everything.
It wasn't held at a gilded seaside resort with hired security and artificial luxury. Instead, it was held right on the grassy lawn behind our Cape house, under a canopy of white fairy lights strung through the old oak branches.
There were thirty guests in attendance—no more, no less. There was Aunt Margaret, beaming proudly in a royal blue linen dress; Attorney Thomas, sipping sparkling cider with a broad smile; a few close teacher friends from Worcester; and Marcus’s parents, who had flown in from Chicago and immediately fallen in love with Lily and our chaotic, genuine household.
I wore a simple, flowing ivory sundress that I had bought at a small boutique in town—nothing extravagant, just elegant and entirely mine. Lily stood beside me as the maid of honor, wearing a pale yellow dress with a matching ribbon in her hair, holding a small basket of wild daisies she had picked from the dunes that morning.
As Marcus slipped the sapphire-inlaid band onto my finger under the warm summer sun, the ocean waves rolled rhythmically against the shore below us like a steady, comforting heartbeat.

We had survived the storm, and on the other side of the deceit, we had found the only thing that truly mattered: the truth of our own strength, and a home built to last forever.
