Part 10: The True Measure of Wealth

Elena stood near the patio, watching Mia run across the grass with Sloane, both of them chasing a golden retriever puppy belonging to one of the clinic's doctors. The blue dress Mia wore today wasn't fancy, but she wore it with the bright, unbothered confidence of a happy, loved child.
Margaret walked up beside her, leaning lightly on her ebony cane, her silver hair catching the golden afternoon sunlight.
"You know, Elena," Margaret said softly, her eyes twinkling with satisfaction, "if someone had told me five years ago that my entire estate would be entrusted to a nurse, I would have laughed them out of the room."
Elena turned, smiling warmly at the wise old woman who had changed their lives. "And now?"
"And now," Margaret said, placing a frail, warm hand over Elena’s, "it is the proudest decision I ever made. Look at them, Elena. Look at what real family looks like."
Elena looked out across the lawn where Richard, Vanessa, Sloane, Mia, and all the community guests were laughing together under the warm sun. There were no folding chairs by the trash cans, no mocking whispers, and no artificial boundaries of wealth or status. There was only community, dignity, and love.

"We finally got it right," Elena whispered.
Margaret nodded, smiling serenely as the evening breeze rustled the leaves above them. "Yes, my dear. We finally got it right. And they lived happily, truly, and compassionately ever after."
