Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Foundation

With the discovery of the ledger, the case shifted from a localized domestic dispute into a full-scale institutional crisis for my family. The local news media caught wind of the story. A prominent, wealthy attorney’s son being prosecuted for child abuse was salacious enough, but when rumors of a multi-year cover-up involving prominent local institutions began to leak, the story went viral.
My father’s law firm began losing corporate clients overnight. Companies did not want their names associated with a partner who financed the suppression of domestic violence and child abuse.
One evening, my aunt Julianne—my father’s younger sister—secretly came to visit me. Unlike the rest of the family, Julianne had always lived quietly on the periphery, rarely attending family functions.
"I wanted to bring you this," Julianne said, placing an old, leather-bound journal on my table. It belonged to my grandmother, my father’s mother. "Your father and mother didn't create this dynamic out of thin air, Emily. Warren was raised by a man who beat him every time he failed to meet expectations, while his older brother was treated like royalty. When his brother died in a car accident, Warren became the golden child, and he swore he would never let anyone see weakness in his own family."
I opened the journal, reading the faded elegant handwriting of a woman who had watched her husband destroy her sons' spirits.
"Warren built Blake into the man he wished he could have been—someone who takes what he wants by force and never apologizes," Julianne explained softly, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. "And he turned you into the caretaker, the one who was supposed to clean up the blood and pretend the house wasn't burning down. When you walked out that door with Lily, you didn't just break a rule, Emily. You broke the entire machine he spent his whole life building."
"Did you ever try to stop it?" I asked her.

"I ran away," Julianne admitted, her eyes filled with regret. "I left the state and stayed quiet. I saved myself, but I left you kids behind with them. I've regretted it every day of my life. What you’re doing now—standing up to him to protect Lily—is the bravest thing I’ve ever seen anyone in this cursed family do."
For the first time since the birthday party, I didn't feel completely alone. I had an ally who understood the monsters we were fighting. Julianne agreed to submit a character affidavit detailing the generational patterns of violence in the household, adding yet another layer of concrete evidence to the prosecution's mountain of proof.
