Part 4: The Collapse of the Empire

Downstairs, the atmosphere in the living room was vastly different from the quiet war room Madeline had established upstairs. Jeffrey was pacing back and forth across the expensive Persian rug, chewing his thumbnail down to the quick. “Are you out of your mind, Jeffrey?” Cynthia snapped, crossing her arms as she sat sprawled on the sofa. “Why are you acting like a whipped dog? It’s just Madeline! She’s been out of the country for two years. She doesn't know anything about how things are run here now. You make more money than ever, this house is in your name, and we hold all the cards!” “You don't understand, Cynthia,” Jeffrey hissed, stopping his pacing to glare at her. “You don't know Madeline! When we got married, she was the one who built my client portfolio from scratch. She has a mind like a steel trap and connections you can't even fathom. If she decides to tear me apart, she won't just leave me broke—she'll destroy everything!” Noelle scoffed, waving a hand dismissively as she sipped a glass of wine. “Stop being such a coward, Jeffrey. She’s a woman alone with a broken, retarded child. What can she possibly do? Sue us? We’ll just claim the boy has psychological issues and that we provided proper care. Besides, your mother-in-law—me—will testify that Madeline abandoned her family for a career in London. Legally, she's the negligent mother, not you!” Jeffrey stared at his mother, desperately wanting to believe her comforting lies, but a deep, gnawing dread twisted in his stomach. He knew Madeline. The woman he had married was not someone who folded under pressure; she was a strategist. Just then, the front door chimed softly, followed by a heavy, authoritative knock. All three of them froze. “Are we expecting guests?” Cynthia asked, her voice dropping an octave as unease crept in. “No,” Jeffrey whispered, his face draining of all color. Before anyone could move toward the foyer, the heavy double front doors swung wide open. Standing on the threshold were two uniform-clad county sheriff's deputies, flanked by a tall, impeccably dressed man in an expensive charcoal suit holding a thick leather briefcase. Marcus Vance stepped into the foyer, his expression like carved granite. Behind him stood a team of three stern-faced individuals wearing lanyards identifying them as Child Protective Services caseworkers. Jeffrey stumbled backward, nearly tripping over the coffee table. “C-can I help you?” Jeffrey stammered, forcing a shaky, nervous smile as he approached the door. “There must be some mistake. This is a private residence.” The lead deputy stepped forward, flashing an official document. “Are you Jeffrey Reynolds?” “Yes, I am, but—” “Mr. Reynolds, you are being served with an emergency ex parte restraining order, a temporary protection and custody order granted by Judge Harrison in favor of Madeline Reynolds and minor child Liam Reynolds,” the deputy stated clearly, stepping past him into the living room. The man in the charcoal suit—Marcus Vance—stepped up beside the deputy, his sharp eyes scanning the room before landing on Jeffrey with utter disdain. “Mr. Reynolds,” Marcus said smoothly, opening his briefcase and pulling out a stack of legal papers. “I am Marcus Vance, senior counsel for Mrs. Madeline Reynolds. Effective immediately, all bank accounts, corporate credit lines, investment portfolios, and real estate assets tied to your name and Reynolds Enterprises are legally frozen under an emergency asset-preservation injunction due to suspected financial dissipation and marital misconduct.” Cynthia leaped off the sofa, her face flushing crimson with blind rage. “You can't do that! Who the hell do you think you are? I live here! My son lives here! You have no right!” Marcus didn't even blink. He looked at Cynthia as if she were a speck of dust on his polished Italian leather shoes. “And who might you be, madam? Ah, yes. Cynthia Miller. Company secretary turned unauthorized houseguest. Rest assured, your name is explicitly listed on the eviction notice and the civil subpoena for alienation of affection and corporate embezzlement.” Cynthia gasped, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Embezzlement? You're insane!” At that moment, the Child Protective Services caseworkers stepped forward, their clipboards ready. “We received an urgent, court-mandated report regarding severe child neglect, malnourishment, and endangerment of minor child Liam Reynolds,” the lead caseworker announced firmly, looking directly at Jeffrey and Noelle. “We are here to conduct an immediate welfare check and take protective custody of the minor.”
