Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confrontation

It was 11:45 p.m. when the X-ray results came back. Miraculously, Gracie had suffered no broken bones, but she had a severe deep-tissue contusion, a sprained lumbar ligament, and extensive bruising that would take weeks to heal. The hospital admitted her overnight for observation and pain management.

Sawyer sat in the vinyl armchair next to Gracie's hospital bed. She was finally sleeping, wrapped in warm hospital blankets, her breathing steady under the influence of mild pain medication. Her small hand remained tucked inside his.

The quiet of the hospital room was broken by the sharp vibration of Sawyer’s phone. The screen illuminated with Carolina’s name. She had called him twenty-four times in the last two hours.

Sawyer slid his thumb across the screen and brought the phone to his ear. He didn't speak.

"Sawyer!" Carolina’s voice burst through the receiver, frantic, sharp, and hysterical. "Where the hell are you?! Why aren't you answering my calls?! Do you have any idea what you've done?!"

"I'm at the hospital," Sawyer said quietly, glancing at his sleeping daughter to ensure his voice didn't wake her.

"Bring her back right now!" Carolina demanded. "My mother called me! She said you’re trying to build some ridiculous case against me! Sawyer, I am her mother! You can't just take her away from me! If you don't bring her home in thirty minutes, I am calling my lawyer and telling him you kidnapped our daughter!"

"You can call whoever you want, Carolina," Sawyer said. "Because CPS and the police are already involved."

Silence deadened the line. For five long seconds, Carolina didn't breathe.

"What did you say?" she whispered, her voice dropping all pretense of anger and dissolving into panic.

"Dr. Vance filed an official report of child abuse," Sawyer said coldly. "The police have been notified. I have provided them with Gracie’s medical records, photographs of her injuries, and the video from Mrs. Kennedy’s security camera."

"Eleanor... Eleanor gave you a video?" Carolina’s voice hitched. "That old hag had no right to record my house! That's an invasion of privacy! It won't hold up in court!"

"It shows you throwing our eight-year-old child into a closet and locking her inside while she screamed," Sawyer said, every word delivered like a strike from a hammer. "It shows you leaving her on the floor in pain for over twenty-four hours while you threatened her to keep her quiet. It holds up perfectly."

"Sawyer, please!" Carolina began to sob, a sound that held no genuine remorse, only the pathetic panic of a predator caught in a trap. "I was overwhelmed! I've been so stressed lately! I didn't mean to hurt her that hard! You know I love her! Please, don't destroy our family over one mistake! What will my parents say? What will people at the club think?!"

Sawyer listened to her words. Even now, facing criminal investigation, her primary concern was her image, her parents' opinions, and her social standing.

"You destroyed this family the moment you put your hands on our daughter," Sawyer said softly. "Do not call my phone again. Any further communication will be through my attorney."

He hung up the phone before she could answer. He immediately blocked her number, then opened his contact list and dialed Arthur Vance, a veteran family law and custody attorney who was also a trusted family friend.

"Arthur," Sawyer said when the line connected. "It’s Sawyer. I need the best emergency custody lawyer in the state, and I need an emergency protective order filed before the family court opens at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow."

"Sawyer? What's going on?" Arthur asked, instantly alert.

"My wife abused Gracie," Sawyer said simply. "I have the medical reports, the hospital admission, and clear video evidence. I am wiping her out of my daughter's life."

"I'm getting on my computer right now," Arthur replied without hesitation. "Send me everything you have. We will have a judge sign an Ex Parte Restraining Order before sunrise."
