Chapter 3 - The Discovery in the Cold Room

Outside, the cool night air hit my face, bringing a moment of clarity amidst the overwhelming nightmare. Marcus’s team had set up a perimeter around the estate. A paramedic gently guided Lily into the back of an ambulance to check her vital signs, offering her a warm blanket and a stuffed bear. I stood by the vehicle's rear doors, my eyes fixed on the house, my stomach churning with a horrible mixture of grief and fury.
Marcus walked out of the side entrance ten minutes later, pulling off his latex gloves. His expression was inscrutable, but there was a sharp edge in his eyes that I knew all too well—it was the look he got when he uncovered something far bigger than expected.
"Marcus," I whispered, stepping toward him while ensuring Lily couldn't hear us. "Is it... is it really Max? Did they actually...?"
Marcus held up his hand, placing it gently on my shoulder. "Elena, listen to me carefully. The meat on that table was not dog meat."
A shockwave ran through me. "What? But the note... the dinner... they told her—"
"They wanted you and Lily to believe it was Max," Marcus revealed, his voice dark with anger. "It was a sickening form of psychological torture designed to break your resolve. The meat on the table was high-end, slow-cooked venison from Arthur’s hunting freezer. They intentionally orchestrated the entire scene—the missing dog, the note, the mysterious meal—to traumatize Lily so severely that you would agree to leave the state and give up your claim on Julian's estate."
I gasped, pressing my hands against my mouth. "They... they lied about eating him? That's monstrous!"
"It gets worse, and better," Marcus continued, lowering his voice even further. "When we searched the subterranean wine cellar beneath the garage, we found Max."
My heart leaped into my throat. "Is he alive?!"
"He’s alive," Marcus confirmed, a rare, small smile touching his lips. "They had locked him in a ventilated storage vault in the basement. They were planning to have a commercial animal transport service pick him up at midnight to drop him off at a remote shelter three states away under a fake name. They wanted him gone permanently so Lily would never have her service animal to comfort her or keep her safe."
Tears, which I had suppressed all evening, finally burst from my eyes. I sank against the ambulance bumper, sobbing with pure, unadulterated relief. Max was alive. My little girl’s protector, her constant companion through her darkest medical struggles, was safe.
"Can I see him?" I choked out.
"Dr. Aris is giving him a quick physical assessment right now to document any neglect or distress for the criminal charges," Marcus said. "He’s a little dehydrated and stressed, but physically unharmed. They're bringing him out now."
A moment later, a officer emerged from the side door leading a large, beautiful Golden Retriever on a leash. The moment Max saw the ambulance, his tail began to thud wildly against his flanks. He let out a soft, joyful whine and broke into a trot, heading straight for us.
"Max!" Lily’s voice pierced the air. She scrambled out of the back of the ambulance, ignoring the paramedic's gentle warnings, and threw her small body onto the grass.
Max buried his wet nose into her neck, licking her tear-stained cheeks furiously while emitting happy, ruffling sounds. Lily wrapped her arms around his thick fur, weeping openly, but this time, her tears were born of absolute joy. I knelt beside them, pulling both my daughter and her furry guardian into my arms, holding them as if the world might try to pull us apart again.
Meanwhile, two state troopers were escorting Arthur and Evelyn out of the main entrance in handcuffs. Evelyn’s pristine silk blouse was rumpled, her hair disheveled, and Arthur was furiously screaming threats about his lawyers.

"This isn't over, Elena!" Arthur roared as he was maneuvered into the back of a police cruiser. "You're living in my house! You're spending my son's money! I will destroy you in court!"
Marcus walked up to the police car, resting his hand on the door frame, looking down at Arthur with icy disdain. "You won't be destroying anyone, Arthur. Because while searching your wine cellar for the dog, we found your secondary safe. And inside that safe were documents that your legal team is going to have a very hard time explaining to the IRS."
