Chapter 4 - A Dinner in the Fortress

At precisely seven o'clock, a sleek black sedan pulled up outside Mina’s modest apartment building in East Boston.

Mina wore the only formal dress she owned—a simple, high-necked dark green dress her mother had bought her for a graduation years ago. She smoothed the skirt, took a deep breath, and walked down the stairs.

The driver held the door open without a word.

They drove out of the city, heading toward the coast where the old money and heavy security of Boston’s elite resided. They passed through high iron gates into a massive estate overlooking the dark, crashing waves of the Atlantic. The mansion was built of dark stone, imposing and fortress-like, surrounded by high walls and subtle security cameras.

When Mina was escorted inside, the interior was surprisingly warm. High wood-paneled walls, soft yellow lighting, and the scent of cedar wood burning in a massive stone fireplace filled the grand foyer.

"Mina!"

A small voice called out from the top of the grand staircase. Ezra came trotting down the steps, wearing soft flannel pajamas. A small white bandage sat on his temple, but his cheeks had regained their rosy color.

"Ezra, don't run," a calm voice followed.

Leo Vance appeared at the head of the stairs. He wore a dark wool sweater and slacks, looking less like a street boss and more like an aristocratic lord resting in his sanctuary.

Ezra reached Mina and threw his arms around her waist. Mina instinctively melted, kneeling to hug the boy gently. "How are you feeling, Ezra?"

"I'm all better! The doctor gave me ice cream," Ezra announced proudly. "Dad said you were coming for dinner. I helped pick the pasta!"

Leo descended the stairs, his eyes fixing on Mina with an intense, quiet evaluation. "Thank you for coming, Miss Reyes."

"You didn't leave me much choice, Mr. Vance," Mina said politely, standing up.

"Call me Leo," he replied, gesturing toward the dining hall. "And in my world, Miss Reyes, offering a choice is a courtesy I rarely extend. Tonight, however, you are an honored guest."

The dining room was vast, but the table was set intimately for three. As they sat, servants brought out plates of hand-made tagliatelle, roasted vegetables, and fresh bread. Ezra chattered happily throughout the meal, telling Mina about his school, his dog named Buster, and how his dad made the best hot chocolate.

Mina watched Leo interact with his son. The terrifying mobster faded away whenever he spoke to Ezra. His voice softened; his sharp eyes grew warm and protective. It was clear that Ezra was the center of Leo’s universe.

After dinner, a housekeeper led Ezra upstairs for bed. Leo invited Mina into his study, where two leather armchairs sat before a crackling fire. He poured a glass of dark amber whiskey for himself and offered Mina a glass of wine, which she accepted.

"I owe you an explanation," Leo said, leaning back in his chair. "And an apology."

"An apology?" Mina asked, swirling the wine in her glass.

"Ezra was taken from his school grounds yesterday afternoon," Leo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "A rival faction thought they could use my son to force my hand in a port negotiation. My security detail intercepted them, but during the firefight, Ezra panicked and ran into the alleys. He hid until he collapsed from the cold."

Leo looked directly into Mina’s eyes. "If you hadn't found him... if you had hesitated, or called the police, my enemies would have tracked my comms and found him first. You saved my life by saving his."

"I did what any decent person would do, Leo," Mina said softly.

"Decent people are rare in this city, Mina," Leo replied, his gaze intense. "I looked into your manager, Burkett. He has been harassing you. He has been stealing from your paychecks."

Mina stiffened. "That's my business."

"Not anymore," Leo said smoothly. "Callahan’s Diner was bought out three hours ago. By me. Burkett was terminated effective immediately."

Mina stared at him in disbelief. "You bought the diner just to fire my boss?"

"I bought the diner to ensure that the woman who saved my son never has to suffer a pathetic coward again," Leo corrected her. "You are now the head manager of Callahan’s, Mina. With a quadrupled salary, full benefits, and complete operational control. Unless... you want something else."

May you like

Mina sat frozen, overwhelmed by the sheer scale of his authority. "Why are you doing this?"

Leo stood up, walking toward her. He stopped just inches away, looking down at her with an expression that made her heart race. "Because a debt to Leo Vance is never left unpaid... and because I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since last night."
