Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary Defended

Inside the mansion, the warmth of the hearth felt like another world.

Lily was wrapped in three thermal blankets on the oversized leather couch in the living room, a cup of warm honey-water clutched between her small, trembling hands. The twins, Owen and Ethan, were resting peacefully in a makeshift crib Rosa had set up near the fireplace, their breathing steady and strong.

Nathan sat on the edge of the couch, watching his niece. The color had finally returned to her cheeks, and her bright green eyes—eyes that mirrored his sister's—were wide and alert.

"Uncle Nathan," Lily whispered softly, taking a small sip of the warm water. "Is he gone?"

"He's gone, Lily," Nathan said, his voice gentle, stripping away the cold armor he had worn for the last seven years. "And he's not coming back. I promise you that."

"Mommy said you'd protect us," she said, a tear finally slipping down her cheek. "She said even if you were mad at us, you were still family."

Nathan felt a sharp pang in his chest. The pride that had kept him isolated in this mountain fortress for nearly a decade suddenly felt petty, fragile, and utterly worthless. He reached out and gently brushed a lock of frozen hair from her forehead. "I was a fool, Lily. But I'm here now. And I'm not letting any of you go."

Rosa walked in carrying a tray of hot soup and a stack of clean towels. She set it on the coffee table and looked at Nathan, her expression a mix of relief and lingering tension. "The state troopers are at the lower checkpoint. The storm is starting to break, and the snowplows are clearing the lower pass. They'll be here in twenty minutes."

"Good," Nathan nodded. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the plastic-wrapped envelope Sarah had sewn into Lily's coat. He placed it carefully on the table. "This contains everything Marcus tried to hide. We're going to hand it directly to the lead investigator."

"What about Sarah?" Rosa asked softly.

Nathan stared at the documents, his jaw tightening. "We're going to find her. Marcus didn't leave her behind at the house by accident. He tried to silence her before he came looking for the kids."

Lily suddenly sat up straight, clutching her blanket tighter. "When we left... Mommy was hiding in the root cellar behind the old barn. She told us to run toward the mountain lights and never look back. She said she would try to follow us if she could."

Nathan stood up immediately, his surgical instincts kicking back in—not for a patient on a table, but for his own sister. "Rosa, keep the children secure. Lock the perimeter doors. I'm going back down the mountain road."
