Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept (A Happy Ending)

Two years later.
The golden afternoon light filtered through the vibrant green leaves of the big jacaranda tree in our backyard, casting dancing patterns across the velvet lawn. The air smelled of woodsmoke, roasted meats, and sweet jasmine.
Laughter echoed throughout the garden.
It was Mateo’s fifth birthday party. The yard was filled with children running around, chasing a piñata shaped like a giant space rocket. Uncles, aunts, and family friends sat at long wooden tables covered with colorful tablecloths, sharing stories, drinking cold horchata, and laughing freely. Don Roberto was at the grill, flipping perfectly seasoned arrachera steaks, while Doña Sofia guided the kids through traditional party games.
I stood near the patio doors, holding a glass of iced lemonade, taking in the entire scene.
Mariana walked up to me from inside the house. She looked breathtaking. She wore a simple white linen sundress, her long dark hair falling softly over her shoulders, her smile bright and radiant. In her arms, she held our six-month-old daughter, Sofia—a beautiful, healthy baby girl with big, curious brown eyes and a dimpled chin just like her mother’s.
I wrapped my arm around Mariana’s waist, pulling her close to my side. She rested her head against my chest, and little Sofia babbled softly, reaching out her tiny hand to grab my shirt button.
"Look at our life, Diego," Mariana whispered, watching Mateo proudly hit the piñata as all the children cheered. "Look at what we built."
"Look at what you built, my love," I corrected gently, kissing the top of her head. "You fought through the darkest time of our lives and made our home a paradise."
"We did it together," she smiled, looking up at me with eyes full of deep, unwavering affection. "You protected us when it mattered most."
Down on the lawn, Mateo broke the piñata, and a shower of candies spilled across the grass. He let out a triumphant roar of joy, grabbed two handfuls of sweets, and came running across the yard toward us as fast as his little legs could carry him.
"Papa! Mama! Look!" he shouted, holding up his treasures proudly, his face flushed with happiness. "I got the best ones for you and baby Sofia!"
I knelt down, wrapping my arms around my son, lifting him into a big hug while Mariana laughed and kissed his sticky cheek. Little Sofia cooed happily, reaching out to pat her brother’s hair.

Standing there under the shade of our jacaranda tree, surrounded by the warmth of true family, absolute peace, and unconditional love, I knew that the darkness of our past had been completely swallowed by the light of our present.
I had promised my family that I would fix things, that I would protect them, and that I would build a home where love reigned supreme. Looking at my thriving wife, my joyful son, and my sweet baby daughter, I knew that promise was kept—not just for today, but for all the tomorrows to come.
