Chapter 1 - The Decoy and the Deep End

My wealthy sister-in-law suddenly offered to take my son to the pool. Hours later, my niece called sobbing: "He won't wake up!" I found my son motionless near the deep end, turning blue, while she actively blocked a lifeguard from helping him. "He almost ruined my $20k Birkin. I gave him a gummy to calm him down, stop being dramatic," she smirked. I rushed him to the ER. But as I sat there, soaked and terrified, the police walked in with a warrant. I realized the medical emergency was just a decoy for a more horrifying trap she had built...
I drove like a woman possessed toward the Willow Creek Country Club, my heart hammering against my ribs after the tearful, frantic call from Sophie Bennett, Lauren Whitmore’s eight-year-old daughter.
“Auntie Rachel… please come,” Sophie gasped through her smartwatch. “Noah won't wake up. Mommy got mad about her purse and gave him a gummy to make him quiet, but I can’t get him to move! He's turning blue!”
Bursting through the heavy club doors, I saw them near the exclusive cabanas. Noah was sprawled on the hard concrete near the deep end, his small frame terrifyingly pale. But what made the bl00d freeze in my veins was Lauren Whitmore. She was physically blocking a panicked teenage lifeguard from reaching my dy:ing son with a medical kit.
"Leave him alone," Lauren snapped at the boy, holding a half-empty mimosa in one hand. "His mother doesn't discipline him. Let him cry it out or I'll have you fired before your shift ends."
I sprinted across the wet tiles, sh0ving her aside with the force of a freight train, and fell to my knees beside my son to start CPR. “What did you do to him?!” I roared, panic tearing at my throat.
Lauren didn’t even flinch. She simply sighed, looking profoundly annoyed. “Don’t be so dramatic, Rachel Bennett. He knocked a strawberry smoothie onto my limited-edition bag. I just gave him an organic herbal supplement to calm him down. He’s just taking a nap.”
“A nap?” I whispered, pressing my mouth over my son's freezing blue lips, forcing my own breath into his failing lungs. “You p0isoned my son, Lauren.”
...At the hospital, the rhythmic, mechanical beeping of the ventilator sounded like a de:ath countdown. I paced the sterile room, my hands trembling, praying for him to open his eyes. Then, Detective Harris stepped into the room, his jaw set in a hard line. But he wasn't alone. A cold-faced woman in a gray suit stood beside him, holding a thick clipboard.
“Ms. Rachel, the preliminary labs are back. This wasn’t just an organic supplement," Detective Harris said, his voice grave. "We found a massive dose of a highly restricted psychiatric tranquilizer in his system."
A j0lt of electricity seemed to surge through me. But the nightmare was just beginning.

The woman with the clipboard stepped forward, her eyes devoid of any warmth. And the words she spoke next made the floor drop out from underneath me. Lauren hadn't just tried to cover her tracks at the pool—she had launched a preemptive strike to completely annihilate my life.
She thought she had backed a desperate single mother into a corner. She didn't realize she had just invited me into a war she wasn't prepared to survive...
