Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum

The silence in Ethan’s office stretched on for agonizing minutes. The distant hum of Manhattan traffic felt like a mockery of my collapsing world.

“We have to fight back,” I muttered, desperation clawing at my throat. “We can challenge the admissibility of the documents. We can claim she hacked my private files illegally.”

“On what grounds, Julian? You left your laptop unlocked in the home office. You used your home Wi-Fi for your personal banking. Under civil law, she had access to joint marital property,” Ethan sighed, rubbing his temples. “Besides, even if we suppress the corporate files in a divorce proceeding, the SEC and the DA don’t need a clean search warrant to investigate a public tip backed by verified bank account numbers. The federal investigation is already spinning up.”

My phone buzzed aggressively in my pocket. I pulled it out with a shaking hand. An unknown number.

I swiped to answer and pressed it to my ear. “Hello?”

“Julian,” Claire’s voice came through the speaker. It was eerily calm, devoid of the tears or anger I had braced myself for. It was the voice of a cold, calculating strategist.

“Claire! Please, where are you? Where is Noah? Let’s just talk—we can fix this—”

“Save the performance, Julian,” she interrupted, her tone sharp as broken glass. “You are currently sitting in Ethan’s office, sweating through your designer suit, realizing that your entire empire is resting on a house of cards I built out of your own arrogance.”

“Claire, I made mistakes, I know I did,” I pleaded, casting a desperate glance at Ethan, who was straining to listen. “The affair... I'm sorry. I was foolish. But involving the authorities, taking my son—that’s crossing a line. We can settle this privately. A generous settlement, full custody sharing—”

“Custody sharing?” Claire laughed softly, a sound that sent a shiver straight down my spine. “You think you are in any position to negotiate custody? You couldn't even be bothered to spend a single weekend at home with a three-month-old infant while you were wining and dining Vanessa at the Grand Meridian. Noah doesn't even know who you are, Julian. And he never will if I have anything to say about it.”

“He is my son!” I shouted, losing my composure entirely. “You can't just erase me from his life!”

“You erased yourself the moment you decided your secretary's amusement was worth more than your family's security,” she replied coldly. “Now, listen to me very carefully. If you want to avoid spending the next ten to fifteen years of your life in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud and embezzlement, you will listen to my terms.”

“Terms?” I whispered.

“Check your email, Julian. I’ve sent a draft agreement to your personal inbox. You have exactly twenty-four hours to sign it over to my legal counsel without a single amendment or contestation.”

“What is in the agreement?”

“Everything,” Claire stated plainly. “Full legal and physical custody of Noah. The Greenwich house signed over entirely in my name. Complete forfeiture of your shares in Carter Logistics, resigning your position as CEO effective immediately. And spousal and child support structured in a way that leaves you with enough to rent a modest apartment in the city—nothing more.”

“You’re stripping me of everything!” I yelled, half-crying. “My company, my home, my son, my entire life's work!”

May you like

“No, Julian,” Claire said softly before hanging up. “I am simply leaving you with exactly what you earned. Nothing.”

The line went dead. I dropped the phone onto Ethan’s desk, staring blankly ahead as the reality of my total destruction settled over me like a lead weight.
