Chapter 10 - The Brightest Horizon

That evening, our home radiated a warmth and happiness that felt sweeter and more permanent than anything we had ever experienced. The storm clouds had parted entirely, leaving behind a clear, beautiful horizon for our family.

We celebrated with a family dinner—Mason’s favorite homemade lasagna, topped with extra garlic bread and a towering chocolate cake that Patrick had clumsily decorated with clumsy, frosting-written letters spelling out OUR HERO.

At the dinner table, little Ruby sat proudly in her high chair, clapping her sticky hands together while Mason laughed, wearing a paper crown that said KING OF THE NICU that I had crafted for him earlier that afternoon.

Patrick stood up from his chair, holding up a glass of sparkling cider.

“I want to propose a toast,” Patrick said, his voice thick with emotion as he looked around the table, his eyes lingering lovingly on Mason, then on me, and finally on little Ruby.

Mason looked up, resting his fork on his plate.

“To our family,” Patrick continued, smiling warmly through the tears shining in his eyes. “We’ve been through the absolute darkest fires together. We faced fear, doubt, and outside malice. But we came out stronger on the other side. And most of all... to my son, Mason.”

Mason’s cheeks flushed a soft, happy pink.

“You are the bravest, smartest, most loyal big brother in the entire world,” Patrick said, raising his glass higher. “Thank you for saving your sister. And thank you for teaching your dad how to truly see, how to truly listen, and how to love without reservation. I love you, buddy.”

“I love you too, Dad,” Mason smiled, his eyes shining brightly.

I reached across the table, taking Patrick’s hand in mine while our son reached out to tickle Ruby’s tiny toes, making the baby burst into a fit of pure, musical giggles that echoed through the warm, cozy walls of our home.

The incubator cord was long gone, a distant memory of a terrifying moment that had tried to break us, but had instead cemented our bond forever. We were whole, we were safe, and our future together was brighter than we had ever dreamed possible.
