Chapter 6 - Uncovering the Truth

The days leading up to the Friday court hearing were busy, but for the first time in years, my home felt filled with a strange, quiet peace. Noah began to open up. We baked cookies, read books, and went for long walks in the park. Without the constant pressure of Lauren’s subtle cruelty and her children’s taunts, Noah bloomed. He smiled more. He laughed.
However, behind the scenes, Marcus Vance was digging deeper into Daniel and Lauren's finances—and what he found made my blood run cold.
On Thursday afternoon, Marcus came over to my apartment with a thick folder of financial documents. Noah was in the living room doing a puzzle. Marcus and I sat at the kitchen table.
"Evelyn," Marcus began, his expression grave. "It’s worse than we thought."
"What did you find?" I asked, pouring him a cup of coffee.
"You mentioned Sarah’s trust fund for Noah," Marcus said, laying out a series of bank statements. "The $150,000 left by her estate. Daniel was the custodian, correct?"
"Yes. But he couldn't withdraw capital without bank approval unless it was for Noah's direct educational or medical needs."
"Well," Marcus said, tapping a red line on a spreadsheet, "over the past eighteen months, Daniel made six separate major withdrawals totaling $65,000. He submitted invoices claiming these funds were for Noah's private school tuition and specialized therapy."
I frowned. "Noah goes to public school. And he’s never been to therapy."
"Exactly," Marcus said, his eyes flashing with anger. "The invoices were fake. The money was transferred directly into a joint account owned by Daniel and Lauren. And do you know what was purchased from that account three weeks ago?"
I leaned in, my heart pounding. "What?"
"A down payment on a brand-new luxury SUV. Registered under Lauren Harper's name."
I sat back, stunned into silence. They hadn't just emotionally abused and abandoned Noah—they were actively stealing his dead mother's legacy to fund Lauren's lavish lifestyle.
"They were draining his trust," I whispered, disgust rising in my throat.
"Yes," Marcus replied. "And here is the kicker: according to the trust agreement, if Daniel loses physical custody of Noah, his control over the trust is immediately revoked, and supervision transfers entirely to you. Lauren knew this. That’s why she was trying so hard to keep Noah isolated, but leaving him at the airport was her biggest mistake. She got sloppy because she thought no one would hold her accountable."

"She thought I was just an old woman who would quietly pick up the pieces and keep my mouth shut," I said, clutching my coffee mug until my knuckles turned white. "She underestimated how far a grandmother will go to protect her grandchild."
"Tomorrow at the hearing," Marcus said, closing the folder with a sharp snap, "we aren't just securing custody. We are going to expose them completely."
