Chapter 10 - Forever Home

The party was winding down as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of violet and orange. The cake had been devoured, the presents opened, and the living room was filled with the happy, exhausted chatter of children winding down after a perfect afternoon.

After walking Claire and her daughter to their car with a warm hug and a promise to visit soon, I closed the front door and locked it—not out of fear, but out of peace, securing our sanctuary for the night.

I walked back into the living room. Lily was curled up on the newly painted yellow sofa, her head resting against the cushion, her eyes heavy with sweet exhaustion.

I walked over, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.

"Did you have a good birthday, sweetie?" I whispered softly.

Lily opened her eyes, looking up at me with a gaze full of absolute trust and love.

"It was the best birthday ever, Mom," she murmured, her voice laced with sleep. "Because we're safe. And we're home."

"Forever," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.

I pulled the cozy blanket up over her shoulders, watching her drift off into peaceful, undisturbed sleep. Then, I walked over to the window, looking out at our quiet, peaceful street under the glittering canopy of evening stars.

Our family was whole again. And our story was finally, truly, happily at peace.
