PART 7 – THE SWISS KEY

Daniel's voice echoed through the abandoned station.
"I'm Ava Cross!"
Then everything dissolved into chaos.
Shouts.
Footsteps.
The sharp hiss of smoke filling the old building.
Dr. Grant grabbed my wrist.
"Don't look back."
Lily was already crying.
"We can't leave him!"
"We have no choice."
Those were the last words Daniel wanted us to hear.
The last gift he could give us...
was time.
A maintenance tunnel beneath the station led to an abandoned subway platform.
For nearly twenty minutes we walked without speaking.
Only when daylight appeared ahead did Dr. Grant finally stop.
No one said a word.
No one needed to.
Daniel Hale had spent eighteen years hiding.
Only to step back into the light...
for us.
Lily broke the silence.
"Do you think he survived?"
Dr. Grant hesitated.
"I think he knew exactly what he was risking."
That wasn't an answer.
Maybe because there wasn't one.
We drove north in silence.
The passports Daniel had left behind weren't fake.
They belonged to real people.
People who no longer existed.
My father's handwriting covered the inside cover of the envelope.
Only use these if every other option is gone.
I stared out the window.
Everything had changed in less than twenty-four hours.
Three months earlier we had been celebrating rescued children.
Now we were fugitives carrying secrets powerful people wanted erased.
That evening we checked into a small roadside motel.
No names.
Cash only.
Dr. Grant connected the hard drive to an old laptop that had never touched the internet.
"We only get one chance," he said.
"If this data is what your father believed..."
"...someone will do anything to destroy it."
Folder after folder appeared.
Financial transfers.
Hospital contracts.
Court orders.
Adoption records.
Thousands of documents.
Then Lily noticed something strange.
"Ava..."
"Look."
Every file ended exactly seven years before Dad died.
"Where are the newer records?"
Dr. Grant frowned.
"They're missing."
"No."
I zoomed in on one folder.
Hidden beneath dozens of ordinary files...
was another encrypted archive.
Its title contained only one word.
HELVETIA
"What does that mean?" Lily asked.
"Switzerland," Dr. Grant replied quietly.
"Our father hid the real evidence there."
The archive required another password.
We tried birthdays.
Nothing.
Mom's name.
Nothing.
The foundation.
Nothing.
Hours passed.
Frustration turned into exhaustion.
Then Lily stood up.
"What was Dad's favorite sentence?"
I smiled despite everything.
"He said it every birthday."
Together we whispered the words.
"The truth survives."
I typed them.
The screen unlocked.
One document appeared.
Only one.
It wasn't evidence.
It was a letter.
My Girls,
If you've reached this file, you've already learned that my investigation didn't end in this country.
It began here.
It ends in Switzerland.
Inside Vault 312 at Helvetia Private Trust is everything they fear.
Every payment.
Every recording.
Every name.
Every child they erased.
Do not trust anyone who contacts you first.
The guilty always move faster than the innocent.
Find the woman called...
Eva Laurent.
She is the only person still alive who knows how to open the final archive.
If she refuses to help you...
tell her these words:
"The oak still remembers the rain."
She will understand.
I wish I could be there.
Love,
Dad.
Silence filled the motel room.
Finally Lily spoke.
"So we're really going."
I nodded.
"We have to."
Dr. Grant closed the laptop.
"Then we leave before sunrise."
At 3:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.
One new message.
No number.
No sender.
Just a photograph.
It showed our mother sleeping in her bedroom.
The picture had been taken through her window.
A second message arrived.
Leave the country...
...and she dies.
Lily's face drained of color.
"They found Mom."
Before either of us could react, the motel television turned on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Then a live security camera appeared.
Our Foundation.
Police vehicles.
Emergency lights.
Employees standing outside in tears.
A news reporter spoke into a microphone.
"This evening, federal authorities executed a search warrant at the Cross Foundation after receiving allegations of financial misconduct and evidence tampering."
"No..."
Lily whispered.
"They're destroying everything."
Dr. Grant's expression hardened.
"They're not looking for evidence."
"They're destroying your credibility."
The report continued.
"Authorities have identified Foundation founders Ava and Lily Cross as persons of interest."
My stomach turned.
"They're making us look guilty."
"They're making sure," Dr. Grant replied, "that no one believes you if you ever tell the truth."
Before dawn, we drove to the airport.
Every television displayed our faces.
Every news channel repeated the same headline.
FOUNDATION UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION
SISTERS MISSING
AUTHORITIES REQUEST PUBLIC ASSISTANCE
Someone had rewritten our story overnight.
Victims...
had become suspects.
As we approached security, Lily quietly squeezed my hand.
"What if Dad was wrong?"
"What if there's nothing in Switzerland?"
I looked at the worn brass key in my pocket.
The same key hidden behind our childhood painting for nearly twenty years.
"No."
"He didn't hide this so we could run."
"He hid it..."
"...so one day we could finish what he started."
Our flight was boarding.
We stepped toward the gate.
Then a familiar voice echoed across the terminal.
"Ava."
"Lily."
We turned.
Standing twenty feet away...
surrounded by airport security...
was our mother.
Tears streamed down her face.
She wasn't alone.
Beside her stood a tall man in a dark suit.
He smiled.
Not warmly.
Knowingly.
He looked directly at me.
May you like
Then he said five words that made my blood run cold.
"I worked with your father."
