Chapter 7 - The Mediation Table

By mid-January, Mark’s high-priced defense attorneys realized they had zero legal footing. Between the medical documentation of my knee injury, the incontrovertible proof of my personal funds injected into the house, and the criminal assault charges hanging over Jenna’s head like a guillotine, Mark was cornered.
A formal mediation session was scheduled for January 22nd at a neutral conference room downtown.
When I walked into the room accompanied by David Vance, Mark looked ten years older. His suit was rumpled, his hair was uncombed, and the arrogant, indifferent posture he had maintained at the Christmas dinner table was entirely gone. Denise was nowhere to be seen—she had wisely distanced herself from the absolute trainwreck her daughter had caused.
Mark looked up, his eyes pleading. "Elaine... please. Can we talk alone for two minutes?"
"There is nothing to discuss alone, Mr. Cameron," David Vance intervened smoothly, pulling out a chair for me. "We are here to review the settlement terms or proceed directly to a high-publicity jury trial where your daughter’s criminal assault charges will be aired in full detail."
Mark swallowed hard and looked at me. "Elaine... I was stupid. I didn't realize... I thought things would just blow over. Please. We can fix this."
"You could have fixed this on Christmas Day, Mark," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "When you told me not to make a scene while I was lying in pain on the floor, you made your choice. Now, you live with the consequences."
The settlement terms drafted by David were comprehensive and uncompromising:
Full ownership of the primary residence: The deed to the house—completely remodeled with my money—was transferred entirely to my name, free and clear of any encumbrances, with Mark legally required to sign over all rights within forty-eight hours.
Financial restitution: Mark’s corporate profit-sharing account was split heavily in my favor to compensate for the emotional damages, legal fees, and the specific property investments I had made.
Restraining order: A permanent mutual non-contact order protecting me from both Mark and Jenna, ensuring neither of them could ever step foot near me or my property again.

Mark stared at the paperwork for nearly an hour, his lawyers whispering urgently in his ear. He looked across the table at me, searching for the accommodating, soft-spoken wife who used to bake his favorite pies and cater to his mother's endless demands. That woman no longer existed.
With a trembling hand, Mark picked up a pen and signed his name on every dotted line.
