Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Strategy

Over the next ten days, the reality of the legal situation began to sink into Brandon’s mind. He had consulted a local tenant lawyer, hoping to find a legal loophole that would allow him to stay in the house indefinitely or force me into a financial settlement.

However, Arthur Pendelton’s paperwork was ironclad. Because Brandon had never paid formal rent, had no signed lease, and because the property was held under a private family trust established before Claire’s marriage, Brandon had no legal equity in the residence whatsoever.

To make matters worse for Brandon, his credit line freeze triggered a chain reaction. His business vendors began demanding upfront cash payments for software subscriptions and office leases. Without my backing, his bank refused to issue new credit lines.

Donna, realizing that the comfortable lifestyle she had enjoyed at my expense was rapidly collapsing, began packing her bags to return to her apartment in Florida. Her air of superiority had vanished, replaced by bitter complaints about how "unwelcoming" I was.

One evening, as I was sitting in the living room reading a book, Donna walked down the stairs dragging a large designer suitcase—a suitcase I remembered paying for as a birthday present two years prior.

Brandon followed her down, looking disheveled and exhausted. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot, and the arrogance that usually defined his posture was replaced by a desperate, twitching stress.

Donna stopped in the foyer and looked at me with cold contempt. "I hope you’re happy, Eleanor. You’ve broken up a family at Christmas. You’re a heartless woman."

I didn't lift my eyes from my book immediately. I turned a page slowly, then looked up at her with a calm, unwavering gaze.

"Donna," I said smoothly, "you entered my home as a guest, consumed my food, sat in my late husband’s chair, and encouraged your son to humiliate me at my own dining table. You did not come here to build a family; you came here to enjoy a free lifestyle. Bon voyage."

Donna’s mouth gasped open in indignation, but she found no words. She turned around, grabbed her suitcase, and walked out the front door into a waiting taxi.

Brandon stood in the hallway, watching the taxi drive away. He turned toward me, his fists clenched at his sides.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Brandon spat out, his voice trembling with anger. "You think because you have money and this house, you can just control everyone's life?"

"I don't want to control anyone's life, Brandon," I said, closing my book and setting it on the side table. "I simply refuse to let you wreck mine. You have fourteen days left to clear your remaining belongings from the second floor."

"Claire is coming with me!" Brandon shouted, stepping toward the living room. "Do you hear me? You’re not going to turn my wife against me! We are leaving together, and you will never see your grandchildren again!"

Before I could answer, a voice spoke from the top of the staircase.

"No, Brandon," Claire said.

Brandon turned around, startled. Claire was standing on the landing, holding a small box of her own documents. She looked composed, her voice surprisingly steady.

"I’m not going anywhere with you," Claire said.
