Chapter 7 - The Eviction

Forty-eight hours later, two marked county sheriff cruisers pulled up to the driveway of 142 Elmwood Lane. I sat in my Subaru across the street, accompanied by Marcus, while a moving truck hired by Emily was parked further down the block.

The deputies knocked on the door. Ryan opened it, looking disheveled and frantic. Behind him, Linda was visibly crying, surrounded by stacked cardboard boxes and oversized luggage.

"Mr. Caldwell," the lead deputy announced calmly. "We are here to execute the writ of possession issued by the municipal court. You, your mother, and your personal belongings must clear the premises immediately."

For two hours, the quiet neighborhood watched as Ryan and Linda were forced to load their belongings into a rented box truck. Ryan tried to argue with the deputies, but they maintained a professional, unyielding presence on the porch. When Linda tried to carry out a set of my late husband’s silver antique candlesticks, the deputy stopped her, checking the list of personal property Emily had provided.

"That stays inside, ma'am," the deputy said firmly, taking the silver from her hands and placing it back on the foyer table.

Emily was inside with Ava and Noah, having already packed their personal clothes, toys, and belongings into a separate van. She stood in the doorway as Ryan picked up his final suitcase.

"You're going to regret this, Emily," Ryan hissed, leaning in close to her. "You won't last six months without me."

Emily looked at him, not with fear, but with a quiet, powerful pity. "Ryan," she said softly, "I’ve been doing everything without you for five years. I just didn't realize it until now."

She handed him his final envelope—a formal service of divorce papers filed that morning by Sarah Jenkins.

Ryan stared at the papers, completely speechless. The lead deputy escorted him down the porch steps for the last time. Ryan got into the passenger seat of his mother’s car, and together with the rental truck, they drove away down the snow-covered street, banished from the home they had tried to steal.
