Chapter 10 - A New Horizon
Six months later, the morning sun rose over the coastal town of Seabrook, casting golden light across the sparkling waters of the harbor.
Our new home was a charming, weathered-wood cottage with a wide front porch overlooking the ocean. The salt air carried the scent of pine and saltwater, and the sound of crashing waves provided a soothing background rhythm to daily life.
On the front porch, Lily sat in a comfortable rocking chair, sketching in a large sketchbook resting on her lap. Her hands were steady, her creative spirit fully restored, and her laughter echoed across the garden where she was planting rows of bright red geraniums.
I stood by the porch railing, sipping a mug of hot black coffee, watching the fishing boats head out past the breakwater as the gulls circled overhead.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a final notification from Miller, confirming that Mark Vance’s federal sentencing had been finalized: fifteen years in a federal penitentiary with no parole eligibility for at least twelve. Apex Financial had completely scrubbed his name from their corporate history, and his former life had vanished into total obscurity.
I tapped the screen, marked the notification as read, and slipped the phone back into my pocket.
I didn't care about Mark anymore. He was a closed chapter in a book that had already been put back on the shelf.
Footsteps sounded behind me on the wooden floorboards, and a moment later, Lily stepped up beside me, leaning her head gently against my shoulder the way she used to do when she was a little girl.
“What are you thinking about, Dad?” she asked quietly.

I looked down at her, seeing the strength, peace, and unwavering resilience shining in her eyes. The nightmare was over. The monster was gone. And my daughter was finally free.
“Just thinking that it’s going to be a beautiful day,” I smiled, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. “Just thinking that everything is exactly the way it’s supposed to be.”
