Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

With Tyler and his mother behind bars without bond, the Vance family empire began to implode with terrifying speed.
Within forty-eight hours of the arraignment, the board of directors at Vance Industries held an emergency meeting. Faced with the leaked audio recordings, the attempted murder charges, and the impending media storm, they voted unanimously to strip Tyler of his executive title and freeze all company assets tied to his personal accounts.
The sleek downtown condo? Foreclosed by the bank.
The luxury sports cars? Repossessed before the week was out.
Even their high-priced defense attorney, Mr. Sterling, quietly withdrew from the case after discovering that Tyler’s retainer checks were bouncing against frozen corporate funds.
Rachel and I spent the weekend at my house, surrounded by boxes of diapers, baby formula, and the quiet comfort of a home built on love rather than greed. Lily was thriving, gaining weight and cooing softly in her crib, completely oblivious to the legal hurricane swirling around her family name.
On a crisp Tuesday morning, a sleek black town car pulled into my driveway.
I watched from the kitchen window as Vanessa stepped out. She looked hollowed out, her designer trench coat wrinkled, her hair pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail. She walked up to the front porch and rang the doorbell.
Rachel paused, a baby bottle in her hand, looking toward the door.
"Stay here," I told her, wiping my hands on a dish towel. "I'll handle it."
I opened the door just enough to block the threshold. Vanessa flinched, her eyes red-rimmed and desperate.
"Diane," she choked out, her voice trembling. "Please. I need to talk to Rachel. Just for five minutes."
"You have nothing to say to my daughter, Vanessa," I said coldly. "If you're looking for Tyler, he's a few miles down the road in a county cell."
"I don't care about Tyler anymore!" Vanessa sobbed, sliding a hand against the doorframe as if she might collapse. "He lied to me. He told me Rachel was unstable, that they were already getting a quiet divorce, and that his mother approved of our relationship. He used me as a pawn to do his dirty work!"
"And you were more than happy to play along as long as you thought you'd share in his trust fund," I replied, my voice hard as stone. "You stood by the car while an innocent newborn baby was baking in the heat. You helped Eleanor steal her phone. Don't play the victim now, Vanessa. The police have your full confession, and the prosecutor isn't offering plea deals to accomplices in attempted murder."
Vanessa sank down onto her knees on the porch, burying her face in her hands. "They're going to put me away for twenty years. My life is over."
"Your life is paused," I said quietly. "Rachel's life almost ended because of your choices. Consider yourself lucky that justice moves slower than the damage you caused."
I closed the door, leaving her weeping on the welcome mat.
When I walked back into the living room, Rachel was standing by the window, watching Vanessa’s retreating figure through the blinds.
"Are you okay, sweetie?" I asked, putting a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"I used to feel angry," Rachel said softly, turning to look at me with clear, steady eyes. "Every time I thought about them, my chest would tighten and I couldn't breathe. But looking at her out there... I just feel empty. They threw away everything—their freedom, their dignity, their family—all for money and control."

"Greed blinds people to what actually matters," I said, wrapping my arms around her.
"Well," Rachel said, a small, genuine smile finally touching her lips as she looked over at Lily sleeping peacefully in the bassinet. "They can keep their money. We have everything we actually need."
