Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Courtroom

By 8:45 AM, the hallway outside Courtroom 4B was packed with local news reporters, defense attorneys, and curious onlookers. News of Richard Carter’s arrest had spread through the county like wildfire. For forty years, the Carter name had been synonymous with money, power, and political immunity.
At 8:55 AM, Richard Carter was brought down the hall in leg shackles and handcuffs. He was dressed in an orange county jumpsuit, but he still tried to hold his head high. Beside him was his high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Arthur Vance—a man who charged eight hundred dollars an hour to make felony charges vanish.
My father saw me standing near the wooden doors of the courtroom. He stopped, forcing the guards to pause behind him.
"Arthur," Richard called out, his voice sharp and commanding. "Stop this foolishness now. You're destroying the family name over a simple discipline mistake!"
I didn't answer. I stood with my arms crossed, watching him.
"Do you think you can survive in this world without my money?" Richard snapped, his eyes narrowing. "That boy of yours has medical expenses! His school fees! Who do you think pays for his trust fund? I built everything you have!"
"You didn't build anything, Richard," I said, speaking clearly enough for the reporters to catch every word. "You stole, you bribed, and you hit children because you’re a coward."
"You arrogant little bastard!" Richard roared, lunging forward, but the guards yanked his chain back hard. "I made you!"
"Quiet in the hall!" the bailiff shouted, opening the doors to the courtroom.
The public gallery was standing room only. I took a seat in the second row, directly behind the prosecution table. Sitting next to the local district attorney was an unexpected guest: Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Jenkins, a sharp, fifty-ish woman with a reputation for destroying public corruption networks. She glanced back at me and gave a single, imperceptible nod. Kaelen’s files had arrived on her desk two hours ago.
Judge Sterling took the bench at exactly 9:00 AM. He looked dreadful. His skin was pale, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shook noticeably as he arranged the paperwork in front of him.
"Case 2026-CR-4412," the clerk announced. "The State vs. Richard Carter, Ryan Carter, and Dale Mercer."
Richard’s attorney immediately stood up. "Your Honor, my clients are respected members of this community. Richard Carter is a philanthropist, a business owner, and a patriarch. The charges stemming from this domestic misunderstanding are entirely inflated. We ask for immediate release on personal recognizance."
The attorney looked smug, confident that Judge Sterling would deliver the customary slap on the wrist.
Judge Sterling looked down at the paper on his desk, then turned his gaze toward Richard Carter. For the first time in thirty years, there was no warmth or familiarity in the judge's eyes. There was only raw, existential terror.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Sterling began, his voice surprisingly firm. "I have reviewed the preliminary evidence submitted by the State, including the unedited video footage from the residence."
"Your Honor, that footage is legally dubious—"
"Silence, Counselor!" Sterling slammed his gavel down with a crack that echoed off the high wooden ceilings. "I have viewed eight minutes of three adult men violently assaulting an eight-year-old child! It is one of the most horrific displays of brazen cruelty this court has ever witnessed!"
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Richard Carter’s jaw dropped. Ryan looked at his father in absolute panic.
"Furthermore," Sterling continued, "the court has been made aware that federal indictments regarding grand fraud, racketeering, and witness tampering have been unsealed against all three defendants this morning."
Richard’s defense lawyer froze. "Federal charges? Your Honor, we have not been served—"
"You are being served right now," AUSA Sarah Jenkins said, standing up from the prosecution table and handing a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents to the defense desk. "Richard Carter, Ryan Carter, and Dale Mercer are named as primary co-conspirators in a twenty-two count federal indictment."
"This is a outrage!" Richard yelled, trying to stand up in his shackles. "Sterling, you can't do this! I made you! I paid for—"
"Bail is DENIED," Judge Sterling shouted over him, slamming his gavel down repeatedly. "Defendants will be remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal Service immediately! Court is adjourned!"
"Arthur!" Richard screamed, turning his head as federal marshals surrounded him, forcing him toward the side exit. "Arthur, fix this! You're my son! You hear me? You're my son!"
May you like
I stood up slowly, watching my father, my brother, and Dale Mercer being dragged through the reinforced steel doors of the holding area.
"I'm not your son," I said softly to the empty aisle. "I'm the man who survived you."
