Chapter 3 - The Airport Ambush

The morning humidity of Orlando International Airport hit like a physical wall as passengers shuffled out of the jet bridge and into Terminal B. Brian and Marissa walked side-by-side, their carry-on bags rolling smoothly behind them. They looked like any other vacationing couple eager to escape the gray Midwest winter for the magic of central Florida theme parks.

"Let's grab a coffee before we head to the rental counter," Marissa suggested, adjusting her oversized sunglasses. "I want an iced macchiato."

"Sounds good," Brian said, scanning the bustling terminal. "Then we check into the resort, drop the bags, and call Helen to confirm the transfer went through."

They took three more steps before four uniformed officers of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department stepped out from the pedestrian flow, blocking their path with calm, professional precision. Two plainclothes detectives flanked them from behind, cutting off any possibility of retreat.

"Brian Vance?" the lead detective asked, his voice flat and authoritative.

Brian blinked, stopping in his tracks. A nervous, defensive chuckle slipped out of him. "Yes? Is there a problem? We just landed—"

"Marissa Vance?" another officer addressed his wife, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in the morning light.

"Excuse me?" Marissa snapped, her voice rising in defensive irritation as she pushed her sunglasses up onto her head. "What is the meaning of this? We are tourists! We have nothing to do with—"

"You are being placed under arrest for suspicion of child endangerment, child abandonment, reckless administration of unauthorized prescription medication to a minor, forgery of legal documents, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud," the lead detective recited smoothly, reading the Miranda rights off a small laminated card.

The blood drained entirely from Brian’s face, leaving him looking sickly gray against the bright terminal windows. "That's—that's insane. There's been a mistake! Our son is with us—wait, where's—" He looked around frantically, suddenly realizing they had claimed Mason was traveling with them, but they didn't even have a child with them on the flight because they had left him locked in a closet in Ohio. The lie cracked instantly under the pressure of reality.

"Your son is safe in Ohio, Mr. Vance," the detective said coldly, grabbing Brian by the right arm and wrenching it behind his back as the metal cuffs snapped shut with a sharp, echoing click. "Along with your daughter, whom you left locked in a house after drugging her unconscious with adult sedatives. Turn around and put your hands behind your back, ma'am."

"No! You can't do this! This is a mistake, we have papers, my father—your father approved—" Marissa shrieked, thrashing against the officer's grip as the handcuffs bit into her wrists. Passersby stopped, staring and whispering as the cuffs clicked shut on her wrists as well.

Within ninety seconds, the high-flying couple who thought they had executed the perfect financial heist were being marched through the crowded terminal in bright daylight, flanked by law enforcement, headed straight for a holding cell instead of a magic kingdom.
