Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The snow fell softly outside our windows on Christmas morning, painting the world in a pristine, beautiful white.

At precisely seven o’clock, Lily bolted down the hallway, her bare feet pattering against the hardwood floor like rushing water.

“Mommy! Julian! Wake up! Santa came!” she shouted with uncontainable joy, leaping onto the living room rug and tearing into the colorful wrapping paper beneath the magnificent evergreen tree.

Julian and I walked into the living room hand-in-hand, laughing as we watched Lily unwrap a giant art set and squeal with absolute delight.

“Look what Santa brought me!” she beamed, holding up a brand-new watercolor palette. “Can we paint together today, Mommy?”

“We can paint all day long, sweetie,” I smiled, kneeling down beside her.

Julian crouched down next to us, handing Lily a gold-wrapped box with a giant red bow. “And just in case Santa missed one, I brought a special helper gift.”

Lily ripped open the box to reveal a sparkling, custom-built wooden art easel with her name engraved in gold lettering at the top. Her eyes went wide, and she threw her arms around Julian’s neck in a massive hug.

“Thank you, Julian! You’re the best!”

Julian looked over Lily’s shoulder, catching my eye. His smile was warm, radiant, and filled with a depth of love and devotion that made my heart melt.

Later that afternoon, the three of us walked outside into the crisp winter wonderland. Lily skipped ahead, her red scarf trailing behind her in the wind as she built a magnificent snowman right in the center of our front yard, complete with a bright carrot nose and a woolen hat.

Julian and I stood side-by-side on the front porch, watching her play with absolute abandon and pure happiness.

Julian slid his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we watched the snow drift gently down from the grey winter sky.

“You know,” Julian whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. “This is the most beautiful Christmas I’ve ever seen.”

I rested my head against his shoulder, looking out at our home, our family, and our future. The bitter cold of the past had melted away entirely, replaced by the brilliant, unstoppable warmth of a brand new dawn.

“It really is,” I smiled, watching Lily wave at us from across the yard. “And our story is only just beginning.”
