Chapter 5 - The Stolen Evidence

The doors of the black SUV burst open. Two burly men in tactical jackets stepped out, accompanied by a third man in a tailored suit. My breath hitched in my throat as I recognized the man in the suit: Richard Vance, my sister's fiancé and a prominent real estate developer with deep political ties across the state.
"Clara!" Richard called out, stepping forward with an easy, rehearsed smile that mirrored my mother's. "Let's be reasonable about this. Hand over the documents and the thumb drive. Your mother is willing to give you a generous monthly allowance if you just sign the conservatorship agreement."
"She embezzled my trust fund, Richard!" I screamed through the cracked window. "She stole everything my father left for Lily and me!"
Richard sighed, as if explaining a minor inconvenience to a child. "Your father was confused when he wrote that will. Your family worked hard to preserve that wealth. You were never capable of managing that kind of money. Look at you—running around train yards with a disgraced private detective. Is this the environment you want for Lily?"
Marcus reached beneath his seat and pulled out a heavy steel crowbar. "Stay in the truck, Clara. When I draw their attention, you and Lily slide out the passenger side and climb through the gap between those two train cars."
"Marcus, no! They'll hurt you!"
"I get paid to do a job, Clara. And today, my job is making sure you get your life back."
Before I could argue, Marcus threw open his door and charged directly at the two security guards, swinging the crowbar with terrifying force. The sudden aggression caught them off guard; one guard went down as Marcus swept his legs, while the other lunged to tackle him.
"Now, Clara! Run!" Marcus roared as he grappled with the guards on the gravel.
I grabbed Lily's hand, pulled her across the front seat, and kicked open the passenger door. Richard spotted us instantly and began sprinting around the truck. "Stop her!" he yelled.
I grabbed Lily by the waist, lifted her up, and pushed her through the narrow gap between two locked freight cars. "Run to the other side, Lily! Don't look back!"
I squeezed through the tight gap right behind her, my jacket catching on a sharp metal bolt. I yanked myself free just as Richard's hand grabbed the fabric of my sleeve. I kicked backward with all my weight, my heel connecting sharply with his knee. Richard groaned and fell back onto the gravel.
"Mom, come on!" Lily cried from the other side of the tracks.

I scrambled out onto the open embankment. Ahead of us lay a steep dirt hill leading up to the state highway. The sound of sirens began echoing faintly in the distance—Marcus must have triggered an emergency alert before he confronted them.
We began frantically scrambling up the dirt slope, digging our boots into the mud, pulling ourselves up by weeds and shrubs, driven purely by adrenaline and the desperate yearning for freedom.
