Chapter 4 - The Legal Battlefield

The dawn broke over the city with a cold, unforgiving gray light that mirrored the state of my soul. I hadn’t slept a wink. After leaving the police station—where I officially filed charges, signed endless stacks of affidavits, and provided Emily’s medical reports as irrefutable evidence—I returned to the hospital to find my daughter awake and eating a bowl of Jello.
Seeing her small, brave smile through the pain had nearly broken my resolve, but I held it together for her. I promised her that the bad men and women were gone, that her father was locked away, and that we were never going back to that house of horrors.
Now, sitting in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of one of the city’s top family law and criminal defense firms, I was staring down an empire of paper. Across the mahogany table sat David Sterling, a high-powered attorney known city-wide as "The Shark." He had a reputation for destroying abusive spouses and corporate fraudsters with equal amounts of clinical precision. Sarah had managed to retain him through an emergency family fund our late grandfather had set up, and his fee was astronomical—a fee I was more than willing to pay by liquidating every single asset Mark thought he was going to walk away with.
"Well, Mrs. Davis," Sterling said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he slid a thick dossier across the table. "The criminal case is airtight. Officer Vance and Officer Higgins secured the scene impeccably. They recovered the white powder—which tested positive for cocaine—and the forensic team found Emily's DNA mixed with Mark's fingerprints on the stair railing, contradicting their ridiculous claim that she 'slipped'."
I nodded slowly, folding my hands on the table. "And the civil and divorce proceedings?"
Sterling offered a thin, predatory smile. "That’s where things get interesting. Because you own the house prior to your marriage—inherited through your mother’s estate—Mark has zero claim to the primary asset. Furthermore, under the state's fault-based divorce statutes, combined with documented domestic abuse and felony child endangerment, we can strip him of any spousal support, freeze his joint bank accounts, and sue him for full punitive damages."
"Good," I said flatly. "I want him completely wiped out. I want him legally, financially, and socially bankrupt. He shouldn't even have a pot to piss in by the time the judge drops the gavel."
Sterling chuckled softly, clearly impressed by my unyielding ice. "Consider it done. But there’s one complication you should be aware of. Mark’s family—specifically his uncle, Richard Davis—is a senior partner at a major corporate lobbying firm downtown. They’ve already retained Marcus Vance—no relation to the officer, thankfully—who is one of the most ruthless defense attorneys in the state. They are going to try to paint you as an unstable, high-stress former military operative suffering from PTSD, using your past service against you to question your fitness as a mother."
My eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "They want to attack my service?"
"They will try," Sterling warned. "They’ll claim your discipline is rigidity, your tactical focus is emotional detachment, and that your home environment is a hazard because of your military background."
"Let them try," I countered, my voice dropping an octave, carrying an immense weight of calm assurance. "Every single psych evaluation, every commendation, every ribbon and fitness report from my intelligence career is meticulously archived. I was decorated for maintaining absolute emotional control under enemy fire. Turning my service against me will be the biggest mistake Marcus Vance ever makes."
Sterling flipped a page in the dossier, raising an eyebrow. "I expected you to say that. Which is why I’ve already subpoenaed Mark’s personal financial records. Guess what we found, Maya?"
"Tell me."
"Over the last six months, Mark hasn't just been cheating with your sister. He’s been embezzling funds from his own architecture firm to fund Serena’s gambling debts and high-end lifestyle. There’s a paper trail a mile long, leading straight to offshore accounts in the Caymans. Not only is he facing felony child abuse charges, but he’s also looking at federal wire fraud and embezzlement. His uncle Richard won't be able to save him from a federal penitentiary."
A slow, grim smile finally touched the corners of my mouth. The universe was aligning. Mark hadn't just tripped up; he had dug his own grave, lined it with velvet, and jumped in headfirst.
"File the motions immediately, Mr. Sterling," I instructed, standing up and buttoning my trench coat. "I want full sole custody of Emily, immediate forfeiture of all shared assets, and a permanent, ironclad restraining order preventing Mark or Serena from ever coming within five miles of my daughter or me."
May you like
"It will be filed by noon," Sterling said, standing up to shake my hand. "Go take care of your daughter, Maya. Leave the execution to me."
I walked out of the high-rise building into the brilliant midday sunlight. The air was crisp, and for the first time in days, I felt the heavy weight on my chest begin to lift. The battle lines were drawn, the artillery was in place, and victory was no longer a question of if, but when.
