We were hanging a wooden birdhouse from the lowest branch of the biggest oak tree, our hands brushing against the rough bark as we worked together to tie the red ribbon securely.
Lily stepped back, wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek, and looked up at me with sparkling eyes. "Do you think the bluebirds will like it here, Mom?"

The red lines that had once scarred her bare feet on that cold hotel carpet were long gone, replaced by the nimble, energetic steps of a happy, thriving seven-year-old girl who knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was cherished, protected, and fiercely loved.
We stood there together watching the leaves dance in the golden afternoon breeze, knowing that no matter what storms the world might try to send our way, our foundation was unbreakable, our hearts were whole, and our future was wonderfully, radiantly bright.
