Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies

News of Amber’s arrest hit the local community like a tidal wave. To the outside world, she was the charming, active PTA mom who volunteered at bake sales and hosted neighborhood block parties. Many of our mutual acquaintances found the news impossible to believe at first, prompting a flurry of rumors and media attention.
Amber’s defense attorney, a high-priced criminal lawyer named Richard Sterling, immediately launched a public relations campaign. He went on local news channels claiming that Amber was the victim of a malicious smear campaign orchestrated by a grieving sister-in-law suffering from mental instability.
“My client is a devoted mother and a loving aunt,” Sterling declared during a press conference outside the courthouse. “The tragic events at the park were the result of a terrible mix-up involving an over-the-counter supplement. The state is overreaching, relying on the unreliable testimony of a traumatized young child.”
Reading those words in the paper made my stomach turn. Sterling was going to attack Lily’s credibility. They were going to portray an eight-year-old girl as confused, lying, or manipulated by me.
I knew I couldn't just sit back and play defense. I hired a family law attorney, Eleanor Vance (no relation to Amber’s father), to secure temporary legal guardianship of Lily. The poor girl was terrified, staying in a temporary shelter while child protective services evaluated the situation.
“We need to establish that you are the safest environment for Lily,” Eleanor told me in her office. “Amber’s legal team will argue that you are trying to steal her child to consolidate control over the family estate. We have to prove that Lily’s safety and well-being are your only priorities.”
The hearing for emergency custody was set for Friday. When I entered the courtroom, Amber was seated at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. Her slicked-back hair and arrogant demeanor were gone, replaced by a sullen, bitter scowl. When she saw me walk in with my attorney, her eyes narrowed with pure venom.
“Your Honor,” Amber’s attorney argued, standing before the judge. “Sarah Carter is attempting to alienate my client’s daughter from her mother. Ms. Carter has demonstrated extreme hostility toward my client and is using this tragic misunderstanding to gain physical custody of Lily Vance.”
The judge turned to Eleanor. “Ms. Vance, how do you respond?”
Eleanor stood up calmly, adjusting her glasses. “Your Honor, we are not asking for permanent custody today. We are asking for an emergency protective order. Lily Vance is a crucial witness to an attempted murder—and a reopened murder investigation. Leaving her in state care or allowing her to be influenced by her mother’s defense team poses a severe risk to her psychological safety. My client, Sarah Carter, is her aunt, the sister of her late father, and the person Lily explicitly sought out for help.”
The judge reviewed the confidential police reports submitted by Detective Miller. He looked down at Amber with an expression of profound disgust.
“Emergency temporary custody of Lily Vance is granted to Sarah Carter,” the judge ruled, slamming his gavel down. “Visitations between the defendant and her daughter are strictly suspended until further notice.”

Amber jumped out of her chair, her chains rattling violently. “You can’t take my daughter!” she screamed at the judge. “Sarah, you bitch! You took my husband, and now you’re taking my daughter! I’ll make you pay for this!”
Bailiffs tackled her back into her chair as she kicked and screamed. I didn't say a word. I just stood tall, holding my head high, knowing that for the first time, both Caleb and Lily were safe from her reach.
