Chapter 1 - The Accusation at the Shower
“Check her bag!”
My sister-in-law, Melissa, pointed straight at my twelve-year-old daughter, Sophie, in front of nearly thirty guests.
Sophie froze beside me.
“What?” she whispered.
Melissa held up her hand dramatically. “My diamond ring is gone. She was standing near my purse.”
My mother-in-law, Carol, immediately nodded.
“I’m not surprised,” she said coldly. “That girl has always had sticky fingers.”
The room went silent.
Sophie’s face went pale.
“Mom, I didn’t take anything.”
“I know,” I said.
Then my husband, Daniel, surprised me.
“Just let them search her bag,” he said. “If she didn’t take it, there’s nothing to worry about.”
I stared at him.
My daughter stared at him too.
“Dad?”
Daniel avoided her eyes.
Melissa stepped closer.
“See? Even her father knows we need to clear this up.”
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't steal your ring.”
“I believe you,” I told her.
Then I looked at Melissa.
“Do you want to search her bag?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.”
I reached for Sophie’s backpack.
She grabbed my wrist.
“Mom, please.”
“I've got you.”
I opened the zipper.
Inside were school notebooks, a water bottle, colored pencils, and a small jewelry box Sophie had been carrying for weeks.
Melissa immediately pointed.
“That! Open that!”
Sophie shook her head.
“Mom…”
I slowly picked up the box.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Just open it.”
I looked at my husband.
Something about his expression bothered me.
He wasn't confused.
He wasn't worried about Sophie.
He looked like someone waiting for a particular outcome.
I opened the jewelry box.
Inside was a piece of jewelry.
But it wasn't Melissa's ring.
It was something far more important.
I looked across the room at my mother-in-law.
Her face suddenly changed.
