Chapter 6 - Exposing the Truth to the World

The trial date for Jenna was set, but before the court proceedings began, Eleanor made one final, desperate attempt to force me into dropping the charges.

She showed up at my local workplace—a reputable engineering firm where I served as a senior project director—and began causing a scene in the lobby. She demanded to see me, crying loudly to the receptionists that I was an heartless son who was trying to put his own mother and sister in prison.

When I walked down to the lobby accompanied by our firm’s head of security, Eleanor rushed toward me, her eyes wide and manic.

"David! You have to stop this nightmare!" she wailed, trying to grab my arms. "The police came to my house today with a subpoena for my bank records! You’re ruining our family! What would your father say if he were alive today?!"

I stood completely still, looking down at her without a trace of emotion.

"My father would be ashamed that you stole over a hundred thousand dollars from your motherless five-year-old granddaughter," I said loudly enough for everyone in the lobby to hear.

Eleanor froze, her face draining of color. "I... I was holding that money for safe keeping—"

"You transferred it to Jenna for luxury clothes, trips to Miami, and her credit card bills," I interrupted firmly. "You stole from Lily. And then when Lily’s presence reminded you of your guilt, your precious daughter abandoned her in a crowded mall hoping she’d vanish."

The lobby fell deathly quiet. Employees and visitors looked at Eleanor with disgust and indignation.

"I gave you every opportunity to be a loving grandmother," I continued. "Instead, you chose toxic favoritism, greed, and cruelty. You are no longer welcome near me, my daughter, or my workplace."

I nodded to the security officer, who stepped forward and firmly escorted Eleanor out of the glass doors. As she was led away, shouting incoherently into the street, I felt a massive weight lift off my chest. The fear and guilt that had controlled me for years was entirely gone, replaced by a profound clarity.

That evening, Marcus filed formal civil and criminal complaints for grand larceny and fraud against Eleanor. The evidence was so overwhelming that the district attorney added embezzlement charges to the docket within forty-eight hours.
