Chapter 6 - The Breaking Point

Ian grabbed my wrist, pulling me hard toward the open car door. "Tell the police you lied! Tell them it was a setup, or I swear to God, I'll take her where you'll never find her!"

The fear that had gripped me for weeks suddenly evaporated, replaced by an explosive, primal fury. I wasn't the scared kid who used to yield to my parents' manipulation anymore. I was Lizzy’s protector.

I jabbed my thumb hard into the nerve cluster on his wrist. He yelped, loosening his grip just enough for me to wrench my arm free. I kicked his shin with all my weight, sending him stumbling back against his car.

Before he could recover, tires squealed around the corner. A police cruiser pulled into the driveway, lights flashing red and blue, followed immediately by Adam’s SUV.

Adam slammed his car door and charged across the lawn, but Detective Miller and two armed officers were already jumping out of the police cruiser with guns drawn.

"Ian Vance! Hands on the vehicle! Do it NOW!" Miller barked.

Ian froze, panic washing over his face as he realized he was completely cornered. Slowly, trembling, he raised his hands and pressed his palms against the roof of his car.

The officers moved in, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping the handcuffs around his wrists.

Adam reached me in seconds, pulling me into a fierce embrace. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"

"I'm fine," I breathed, my whole body shaking as the adrenaline washed out of me. "He... he came for her, Adam."

"He'll never get near her again," Adam vowed, kissing the top of my head.

As Detective Miller shoved Ian into the back of the police cruiser, Ian looked back at me through the open window. For a second, behind the addiction and the desperation, I saw a flash of the little brother I used to protect when we were kids.

"I'm sorry, Nat," he choked out, tears finally breaking through his hard exterior. "I'm sorry..."

"I know you are, Ian," I said softly, standing tall beside my husband. "But you need help, and Lizzy needs a life."
