Chapter 7 - The Depositions

The formal depositions for Carla’s criminal trial were held in the high-ceilinged conference room of the District Attorney’s office.

Because of the protective orders, the depositions were staggered. I was scheduled first, followed by my brother David, and finally my parents and Carla.

I sat at the end of a long mahogany table. Beside me was Victoria, and across from us was Prosecutor Brenda Walsh—a sharp, no-nonsense attorney with twenty years of trial experience—and Marcus Thorne, who was looking increasingly tired and disheveled.

For three hours, Thorne tried to pick my story apart.

"Ms. Vance," Thorne said, leaning over the table, his posture aggressive. "Isn't it true that you have a history of resentment toward your sister Carla?"

"I have a history of protecting myself from her," I corrected calmly.

"You allege that my client intentionally struck your daughter with a steel skewer," Thorne continued. "Isn't it possible that in the chaotic environment of an outdoor summer party, with music playing and people moving around, your daughter simply backed into the skewer while Ms. Vance was holding it?"

"A simple contact does not shatter a child's tibia in a spiral fracture, Mr. Thorne," Prosecutor Walsh interjected smoothly. "We have three expert orthopedic medical opinions confirming that the fracture required direct, intentional downward blunt-force impact."

"Let me ask you about the moment right after," Victoria said, taking over the questioning. "Naomi, describe what your mother, Eleanor Vance, said to you while your daughter was screaming on the ground."

"Objection!" Thorne snapped. "Mrs. Vance is not the defendant in this criminal proceeding!"

"She is an co-conspirator under investigation for witness intimidation, Mr. Thorne," Prosecutor Walsh noted calmly. "Overruled. Answer the question, Naomi."

I looked directly into the lens of the video camera recording the deposition.

"My mother told me that if I called the police or filed charges, I would regret it," I said, my voice clear and unshakeable. "She told me that grandparents have rights, and that she would use her money to take my daughter away from me so I would never see her again."

Thorne wiggled his collar, looking visibly uncomfortable.

An hour later, it was my brother David’s turn. He walked into the room wearing a simple dress shirt, looking nervous but determined. He swore the oath, sat down, and delivered thirty minutes of damning testimony that systematically dismantled thirty years of my parents' lies.

He documented four separate incidents of unprovoked physical violence committed by Carla during their childhood—incidents where my parents had paid off victims, lied to school authorities, and threatened David with disinheritance if he ever spoke the truth.

"Why are you coming forward now, Mr. Vance?" Prosecutor Walsh asked him.

David looked across the table at Thorne, then directly into the camera. "Because for twenty years, my parents enabled a monster. They protected Carla at the expense of everyone else. I was too cowardly to stop it when I was young. But I won't let them destroy my sister Naomi and my niece Lily. It ends with my generation."

By the time my parents were brought in for their depositions later that afternoon, the defense was in complete collapse.

My father sat in the waiting room, looking diminished. The confident, booming businessman was gone; in his place was a man whose business was bleeding money, whose reputation was in tatters, and whose son had just publicly exposed his family's darkest secrets.

My mother tried to approach David in the hallway. "David, please! How could you do this to your own family? To your sister?"

David stopped, looked at our mother with a mixture of pity and sad detachment, and said, "Naomi is my family, Mom. You and Dad are just people who raised us."

He turned and walked away, leaving Eleanor standing alone in the middle of the marble floor, her polished façade finally crumbling into tiny, irrecoverable pieces.
