Chapter 5 - The Screaming in the Hallway

Tuesday afternoon arrived, bringing with it a tense, heavy air. I knew Kelsey’s flight was scheduled to land at 2:30 PM. Based on traffic from the airport, she would likely arrive at my apartment by 4:00 PM.

I sent Sophie to Sarah’s apartment upstairs at 3:30 PM. I didn't want her to see the confrontation that I knew was coming. I made myself a cup of tea, sat at my kitchen counter, and waited.

At exactly 4:12 PM, the quiet of the afternoon was shattered.

I heard the heavy thud of the building’s downstairs door slamming open, followed by the aggressive clack of high heels echoing up the stairwell. She wasn't just walking; she was marching.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

The knock on my door was so violent the wood rattled in its frame.

I got up, walked calmly to the door, unlocked it, and pulled it open.

Kelsey stood there, looking flushed and furious. Her tan was stark against her white cropped top, her oversized sunglasses pushed up into her messy curls. Behind her stood Brent, holding two massive, pink rolling suitcases, looking deeply uncomfortable and shifting his weight from foot to foot.

"Where is she?" Kelsey demanded, trying to push past me into the apartment.

I stepped firmly into the doorway, blocking her path. My face was an absolute mask of calm. "She’s not here, Kelsey."

"What do you mean she’s not here?!" Kelsey shrieked, her voice echoing down the hallway. "Give me my daughter, Nora! We've been flying for six hours, I’m exhausted, and I want to go home. Get out of my way!"

"You don't have a home to take her to, Kelsey. You gave up that right when you abandoned her to go to Mexico."

Kelsey let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Abandoned her? Are you insane? I left her with her aunt! You're her family! It’s babysitting, you dramatic psycho!"

"Babysitting requires consent, a return time, and provisions," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "You lied about where you were going. You left a four-year-old child with a single pull-up and no car seat. You crossed an international border. And then you extended your trip for your own pleasure."

"I don't have to explain myself to you!" Kelsey screamed, her face contorting with rage. She lunged forward, grabbing my arm, trying to force her way inside. "Sophie! Sophie, where are you?! Mommy’s here!"

"Brent," I said loudly, looking past my sister to the boyfriend. "If she doesn't take her hands off me right now, you are both going to jail. Look at the wall behind you."

Brent looked up. Sitting on the small hallway table just inside my door was a crisp, white stack of papers.

I shook my arm free from Kelsey’s grip, picked up the documents, and held them out. "This is an emergency order from the county family court, signed by Judge Evelyn Vance. As of yesterday morning, I have sole legal and physical custody of Sophie. You are legally barred from removing her from my care."

Kelsey snatched the papers from my hand, her eyes scanning the text frantically. As she read the words Child Abandonment, Emergency Custody, and Restraining Order, the color drained completely from her face. The fury mutated into a raw, ugly desperation.

"What... what is this?" she whispered, her voice cracking. Then, the realization hit her, and she started screaming. It was a terrifying, animalistic sound that rattled the walls. "You stole my daughter! You psycho bitch! You stole my child! I’ll kill you! I’ll call the police!"

"Go ahead," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket. "In fact, I’ve already called them. They’re downstairs right now."

As if on cue, the heavy doors downstairs opened again, and the firm, measured footsteps of two police officers echoed up the stairs. It wasn't Deputy Miller this time, but two uniform officers who looked like they had zero patience for dramatics.

"What’s the problem here?" the lead officer asked, looking between Kelsey’s hysterical face and my calm posture.

"She took my daughter!" Kelsey cried, throwing herself toward the officer, tears finally streaming down her face. "She got some fake court paper and she’s refusing to give me my baby!"

I handed my copy of the certified court order to the second officer. He scanned it, checked the raised gold seal, and looked up at Kelsey. "Ma'am, this is a valid, certified court order. Ms. Nora Vance has legal custody. You need to step away from the door."

"No! She’s mine! You can't do this!" Kelsey shrieked, flailing her arms. Brent tried to grab her shoulder to calm her down, but she slapped his hand away. "Nora, you miserable, lonely bitch! You’ve always been jealous of me! You’ve always wanted my life! You’re using my daughter to punish me!"

"I am protecting your daughter from you," I said clearly.

The officers firmly stepped between us, physically guiding Kelsey back toward the stairs. "Ma'am, you need to leave the premises immediately. If you continue to scream and disturb the peace, we will arrest you for disorderly conduct. Any dispute over custody must be handled in family court. Move along."

Kelsey was hysterical, her screams echoing all the way down the three flights of stairs and out into the street. "I’ll destroy you, Nora! I’ll take everything you have! You’ll never see her again!"

When the building doors finally slammed shut, absolute silence returned to the hallway. I leaned against my closed front door, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. I closed my eyes and took a long, shaky breath.

The first battle was over. But I knew the war had just begun.
