Chapter 4 - The Audit Begins

With the emergency injunction successfully executed and Madison out of the house, the legal battle shifted from an emergency rescue operation to a methodical, grinding forensic investigation. Marcus Vance’s firm wasted no time. They brought in a specialized forensic accountant named David Chen, a man whose reputation for uncovering hidden assets and corporate financial manipulation was legendary in financial circles.

David set up a temporary workspace in Rachel’s guest room alongside my own laptop. For three solid days, we poured over digital ledgers, tax returns, LLC filings, and corporate credit card statements linked to Ethan’s architectural firm, Bennett & Associates.

“Your husband was remarkably sloppy with his digital trail, considering he’s an architect who prides himself on precision,” David noted on a rainy Thursday afternoon, spinning his laptop around so I could see a complex web of transactions. “Look here. Three months ago, right around the time you left for your Chicago certification training, he created a secondary corporate subsidiary registered under an inactive Delaware LLC.”

I leaned in closer, tracing the glowing lines on the screen. “What is this subsidiary for?”

“On paper, it’s listed as a developmental land acquisition fund,” David explained, clicking on an attached PDF document. “In reality, it’s a shell company he used to siphon marital funds away from your joint accounts and into a private, un-audited account controlled exclusively by him. He transferred a total of seventy-four thousand dollars over a four-month period. That money didn't just pay for Madison's interior design invoices and nursery furniture; it was designed to hide liquid assets from you before filing for a quiet, uncontested divorce.”

“He was planning to blindside me with legal papers while I was still working out of state,” I realized, the pieces finally clicking together with terrifying clarity. “He thought my certification trip was the perfect smoke screen.”

“Exactly,” David nodded. “And because you caught him mid-transition and secured an immediate freeze on all primary and secondary assets, those shell company transfers are now classified by the court as fraudulent conveyance and intentional dissipation of marital property. Under state law, the judge can award you a disproportionate share of the remaining estate to penalize him for this concealment.”

While David tore apart Ethan’s financial architecture, I focused on rebuilding stability for Sophie. My daughter was back in her own school, sleeping peacefully in Rachel’s guest room with her door wide open, surrounded by her favorite books and a growing collection of glitter-covered paper flowers. Every afternoon after work, I picked her up, and we spent hours talking about school, building Lego castles, and laughing over silly jokes. The dark shadow that had settled over her spirit during those few days in the altered house was slowly beginning to lift.

However, Ethan’s family was not ready to accept defeat quietly.

On Friday evening, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unrecognized local number. Expecting it to be Ethan’s attorney trying to negotiate a settlement, I answered immediately.

“Sarah? It’s Elena. Ethan’s mother.”

Her voice carried the chilly, condescending tone I had endured at every family holiday for nearly a decade—a tone that always implied I was somehow falling short of the aristocratic standards of the Bennett bloodline.

“Hello, Elena,” I said evenly, leaning against the kitchen counter.

“I am calling because this family has tolerated quite enough of your dramatic, vindictive public spectacles,” Elena began without preamble. “Freezing my son’s professional accounts, calling the police to harass a pregnant young woman, and dragging our family name through the local courts over a simple domestic rearrangement. Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for Ethan at his firm?”

“Let me stop you right there, Elena,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into a calm, ice-cold register. “Your son lied to me, liquidated Sophie’s college fund, dismantled my seven-year-old daughter’s bedroom while I was away on mandatory work travel, and conspired with his mistress to unlawfully displace us from our home. If you find my response embarrassing, you should have spent the last eight years teaching your son basic ethics and human decency.”

“You are twisting the narrative!” Elena snapped, her composure cracking. “Ethan made a mistake, yes, but Madison is carrying his child! A child needs stability, whereas you were never around because of your career ambitions! You chose work over your family, Sarah. You brought this upon yourself.”

“I didn't choose work over my family, Elena; I chose to build a secure future so I wouldn't have to depend on a man whose loyalty evaporates the moment things get inconvenient,” I replied sharply. “And for the record, any further attempts by you, your daughter Claire, or Ethan to contact me or my daughter outside of legal channels will be documented and added to our harassment complaint. Have a good evening.”

I hung up before she could sputter another word. Rachel, who had been listening from the dining table, smiled broadly and raised her water glass in a silent toast.

Two hours later, Marcus Vance called with news that made the entire week’s stress worthwhile.

“Sarah, Ethan’s legal counsel just reached out with an emergency settlement proposal,” Marcus said, sounding thoroughly amused. “They want to discuss terms immediately. Your husband just realized that David’s forensic audit report has been submitted to the judge, and his firm’s senior partners are threatening to strip him of his partnership if the fraud charges go public.”

“What are his proposed terms?” I asked, leaning against the desk.

“Full custody to you, exclusive permanent ownership of the marital home without requiring a buyout, immediate return of all diverted funds from the shell company, and full coverage of all legal fees incurred by your representation,” Marcus listed off. “In short, Sarah... they are offering you total victory.”
