Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Driveway

"Stop it, Rachel," Dad said, his voice trembling with a heavy, broken fatigue. "Stop lying to her. Stop lying to everyone."

Rachel froze, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Dad? What are you talking about?"

Dad turned his gaze toward me, stepping closer until he stood just a few feet away. He looked smaller than I remembered, stripped of the proud, stubborn demeanor he had carried my entire life.

"Your sister didn't just make a bad bet, Elena," Dad said, his voice cracking. "And it wasn't just Mark's gambling. Rachel... Rachel used our signatures. She forged documents four months ago to take out a second mortgage behind our backs."

The driveway fell into absolute, stunned silence. A chilly gust of wind rustled the bare oak trees above us, but nobody moved.

Rachel’s face drained of every drop of color. "Dad... shut up. What are you saying?"

"I'm telling the truth," Dad whispered, tears finally spilling over his wrinkled cheeks. He looked at me, his eyes full of profound remorse. "We found out last month, Elena. When the first notice arrived in the mail. We wanted to tell you, we really did. But Rachel begged us not to. She said if you found out, you’d cut us off completely—that you’d never forgive us for letting Mark leech off the family. And she was right. We were cowards. We kept quiet because we were terrified of losing your financial safety net, while simultaneously treating you and Jake like second-class citizens."

Mom buried her face in her hands, letting out a muffled sob against the front porch pillar.

I stood frozen, processing the avalanche of betrayal. It wasn't just that my parents had favored Rachel; it was that they had knowingly enabled a financial parasite while looking down on me—the daughter who worked eighty-hour weeks, saved every penny, and responsibly managed a trust designed to protect everyone.

"And my son?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Where did Jake fit into all of this, Dad? Was forgetting his Christmas gift just an accident, or was it because you were too busy stressing over Rachel's criminal mess to even remember he exists?"

Dad flinched as if I had struck him physically.

"We messed up, Elena," Dad choked out. "God help us, we messed up. We took you for granted because you were always the strong one. We thought you didn't need us to check in on you. Rachel and her kids were always so loud, always demanding our attention... and we just assumed you and Jake would always be there in the background."

"Well, you assumed wrong," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "The background is gone. And so is the trust."

Rachel suddenly snapped out of her shock, her panic instantly morphing into furious rage. She lunged forward, pointing a shaking finger directly into my face.

"You selfish, cold-hearted b****!" Rachel shrieked, losing all control. "Mom and Dad are going to be homeless by this afternoon! Is that what you want? Do you want your own parents sleeping on the street just to teach me a lesson?!"

"No, Rachel," I replied calmly, stepping back to avoid her flailing hands. "I don't want Mom and Dad homeless. Which is why I'm going to make you an offer."

Rachel blinked, caught off guard. "An... an offer?"

"Yes," I said, crossing my arms. "The trust has enough equity to clear their debts entirely. Every single penny of the mortgage, the private loan, and Mark's debts. But it comes with conditions. Non-negotiable conditions."
