Chapter 8 - A New Celebration

Spring arrived with a burst of vibrant color, painting the harbor outside my new apartment in shades of emerald and sapphire. Julian and I had just signed a lease on a gorgeous, sun-drenched loft apartment on the top floor of a historic brick building downtown, complete with exposed beams, a balcony overlooking a community garden, and a modern kitchen where we regularly cooked elaborate weekend dinners together.

On my twenty-sixth birthday—almost a full year to the day since the disaster in the driveway—Julian told me to clear my schedule for the entire evening.

“No work, no spreadsheets, no excuses,” he said with a warm, mischievous grin as he handed me a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box over breakfast.

I raised an eyebrow, unwrapping the box to find a pair of elegant silver earrings shaped like tiny maple leaves. “Is this a bribe for something?”

“It’s a celebration,” Julian corrected, leaning across the small wooden table to kiss my forehead. “Today is about you. Only you.”

That evening, Julian drove us to a breathtaking rooftop restaurant overlooking the glittering harbor. The ambiance was serene, illuminated by hundreds of fairy lights strung across the pergola. As we were seated at a quiet corner table with an unobstructed view of the water, the head waiter approached us with a warm smile.

“Good evening, Ms. Claire. Happy birthday,” the waiter said smoothly, placing a chilled bottle of sparkling cider on the table.

I looked up in surprise. “How did you know my name?”

Julian chuckled, reaching across the table to take my hand in his. “I may have tipped the reservation coordinator to make sure everything was perfect. And trust me, nobody is going to ruin this dinner.”

I looked around the restaurant. There were no crying siblings, no demanding phone calls, no passive-aggressive family members lurking in the background. There was only the gentle sound of soft jazz music, the warm glow of the city lights, and a man who looked at me not as a caretaker or a servant, but as an equal partner and the absolute center of his world.

When the dessert arrived—a rich, decadent chocolate tart—the delicate white icing written across the edge of the plate read simply: Happy Birthday, Claire.

No crossed-out names. No erased cakes. Just my name, proudly and properly displayed.
