Chapter 6 - The Truth Laid Bare

"Dean, what is going on here?" DA Hayes asked, his eyes darting uneasily between my father and the state troopers standing at the door.

"Nothing!" Dean spat, his composure completely shattering. He rushed toward Marcus. "Get out of my house! Get that equipment out of here right now or I will have you arrested for trespassing!"

Ethan stepped directly into Dean’s path. Standing six-foot-three with shoulders broadened by years of construction work, Ethan didn't even have to push him. He simply stood like a stone wall, blocking my father effortlessly.

"Don't touch my brother-in-law, Dean," Ethan said, his voice a low, threatening rumble that made several guests step back. "You've laid hands on my son for the last time. Sit down and watch."

Marcus plugged the drive into the projector. With a flick of a switch, a bright white square illuminated the grand silk-covered wall of the dining room, right above the antique sideboard.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Attorney Vance's authoritative voice cut through the chaos, "what you are about to see is unedited footage pulled directly from the internal security network of this home, timestamped this past Tuesday through Thursday."

"Turn it off!" Vivian screamed, lunging toward the power outlet, but Eleanor Vance casually stepped in her way, holding up an injunction order.

The video began to play.

The high-definition image showed the sparkling, immaculate kitchen. Then, the side door opened. The camera clearly captured my father grabbing five-year-old Noah by his upper arm—grabbing him so hard the toddler was lifted slightly off his feet. Noah was crying, his little hands reaching out, clutching his stuffed fox.

"Please, Grandpa! I want my Mommy! I'll be good!" Noah’s tiny, terrified voice echoed through the high-end speakers Marcus had connected.

On the screen, my father shoved the crying boy into the dark pantry. "Shut up!" Dean’s voice on the tape was cold, sharp, and stripped of all refined manners. "You are an unwanted burden. You and your mother both. You'll stay in there until you learn how to behave in a real family."

The footage accelerated. It showed my mother walking over a few hours later. She didn't open the door. She simply reached out, clicked the deadbolt into place, and walked away. The video showed night falling, the house going dark, and the red security light blinking outside the locked oak door while a child wept inside in total darkness.

Gasps of horror erupted across the room.

A prominent local philanthropist covered her mouth, tears springing to her eyes. Mayor Thomas looked at Dean with absolute disgust, slowly taking two steps away from him as if my father carried a contagious disease. DA Hayes’s face was grim; he turned his back on Dean completely and walked over to the state troopers.

"You monsters," a woman near the front whispered loudly. "He's just a baby!"

Dean looked around the room, his eyes wild as he realized his precious social standing—the ultimate currency he had spent his entire life building—was crumbling into dust right in front of him.

"It was a timeout!" Dean stammered, his aristocratic composure entirely gone. His face was blotchy, his hands shaking violently as he pointed at me. "She raised him to be soft! He needed discipline! We were trying to fix what she ruined!"

"He was dehydrated to the point of kidney distress, Mr. Mercer," Attorney Vance announced, holding up the certified medical records. "He had fingerprint marks bruised into his skin. And you left him in a windowless room for over fifty hours without proper sustenance."

"I am the owner of Mercer Development!" Dean screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. "You can't do this to me! In my own home!"

"No, Dean," DA Hayes said coldly, stepping forward with the state troopers. "You did this to yourself."
