Chapter 5 - The Awakening

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of legal maneuvers and medical vigils. Armed with the flash drive David provided and the forensic evidence gathered from the mansion—including a jar of industrial caustic cream found hidden in my mother’s vanity—the police arrested Robert and Patricia Miller at their home.

The local news picked up the story immediately: Prominent Wealthy Couple Arrested for Attempted Murder and Child Abuse of Granddaughter. The community was horrified. The pristine facade my parents had spent a lifetime building shattered into a million unfixable pieces.

But none of that mattered to me. I only cared about the small bed in the Pediatric ICU.

On Tuesday morning, the doctors slowly began to reduce Lily’s sedation. I sat by her side, holding her uninjured hand, singing her favorite lullaby in a low, trembling voice.

"Mommy?"

The voice was incredibly faint, raspy from the breathing tube that had recently been removed.

Lily’s left eye fluttered open. The right side of her face was completely covered in thick, sterile white bandages, shielding the raw, healing skin underneath.

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," I sobbed, leaning over her gently, being careful not to touch her injuries.

"Did I... did I ruin the party?" she whispered, a tear leaking from her single open eye, soaking into the edge of the gauze. "Grandma said... Grandma said if I didn't look pretty, I shouldn't be seen."

My heart broke into a thousand pieces, but I forced my voice to remain strong. "No, my beautiful, sweet girl. You didn't ruin anything. You are the most perfect, wonderful thing in this whole world. Grandma and Grandpa are bad people, and they are never, ever going to see you or hurt you again. The police took them away."

May you like

Lily looked at me for a long moment, processing my words through the haze of recovery. "Can we go home to our apartment now? Where the walls are thin?"

"Soon, baby," I smiled through my tears. "Very soon."
