Chapter 3 - The Midnight Fallout

Back inside the warm dining room, the atmosphere had transformed from festive cheer to an absolute nightmare.
Dad was still slumped over the mahogany table, his trembling fingers clutching the heavy stack of papers as if they were venomous snakes. The numbers printed on those pages didn't lie. They were audited, forensic, and entirely undeniable.
"How... how did they find this?" Dad muttered, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. He looked up at my mother, whose face had lost every ounce of color. Her hands were covering her mouth, her eyes wide with shock.
My brother, Marcus, was pacing frantically back and forth across the hardwood floor, kicking his fallen chair aside without a care. "This is a nightmare! This is an absolute nightmare! If the bank sees these audits, if the IRS gets a whiff of this... we're finished. Everything is gone!"
My sister, Chloe, had collapsed back into her seat, tears streaming down her face, though they were driven entirely by self-pity rather than remorse. "He knew. All this time, he knew, and he just... he just sat there and let us do it."
The documents I had handed them contained hard, unassailable evidence of my brother’s corporate embezzlement from the family business—a business where Dad was the nominal CEO and Marcus was the corrupt COO. But that was only the tip of the iceberg. The folders also detailed how my mother and sister had systematically drained joint accounts, falsified tax documents, and used illegal offshore transfers to hide assets, all while pretending to be victims of financial hardship.
For years, I had quietly hired investigators and forensic accountants to clean up their messes behind the scenes, protecting them from criminal prosecution because of some misguided sense of family loyalty. But tonight, when they handed me that cruel exclusion from the will, something inside me snapped. I didn't destroy the evidence. Instead, I packaged it, added an automated timestamped submission to federal regulators and legal authorities, and handed the master copies directly to them.
The submission was scheduled to process automatically at 8:00 AM on Christmas morning unless a master revocation code was entered—a code that only I possessed.
Dad slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the crystal glasses. "We have to call him. Someone call him right now!"
Marcus stopped pacing, his eyes darting wildly. "He’s not answering his phone. I tried twice already. It goes straight to voicemail."

Mom began to cry in earnest, rocking back and forth in her chair. "We're going to lose everything. The house, the cars, our freedom... Oh God, we're going to prison."
The silence that followed was suffocating. The Christmas tree lights twinkled merrily in the corner, mocking the absolute ruin that had just descended upon them. They had wanted to punish me on Christmas Eve, but instead, they had signed their own warrants. And as the clock ticked closer to midnight, the terrifying reality of what they had done began to sink deep into their bones.
