Chapter 3 - The Golden Trap

Mark and Diane returned from Hawaii golden-brown, relaxed, and brimming with condescending satisfaction. Diane had spent the week bragging on social media about their five-star resort, posting photos with captions like "Family first" and "Well-deserved peace away from the drama."

When Mark pulled his luxury SUV into the driveway, he expected to find me waiting in the kitchen, exhausted, subdued, and desperate for his approval. He expected to hear me apologize for "making a scene" before they left.

Instead, the house was dead silent.

"Claire?" Mark called out, stepping into the foyer, his rolling suitcase clicking against the marble tile. "We’re back. Grab the bags from the trunk."

No answer.

Diane walked in behind him, fanning herself with a straw hat. "She's probably giving you the silent treatment, Mark. Don't enable her. Just leave the luggage in the hall and tell her to cook dinner."

Mark walked deeper into the house, his footsteps echoing unnaturally. The living room looked strangely open. Then he noticed it: Ethan’s playpen was gone. The framed family photos on the mantle had been stripped down, leaving only blank hooks.

He walked into the dining room. The room was completely bare except for the dark oak table and the single white folder sitting in the center.

Mark frowned, picking up the folder. Diane ambled in behind him, looking around with growing annoyance. "What is this? Did she leave a dramatic note?"

Mark opened the folder. His eyes landed on the first page, and the color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he had seen a ghost.

IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE FIRST JUDICIAL DISTRICT CLAIRE ELIZABETH FRAZER, PETITIONER VS. MARK ANTHONY FRAZER, RESPONDENT EMERGENCY EX PARTE MOTION FOR SOLE PHYSICAL AND LEGAL CUSTODY; TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER; EMERGENCY FREEZE OF MARITAL AND CORPORATE ASSETS.

"What... what is this?" Mark stammered, his fingers trembling as he flipped to the second page.

It was the medical affidavit.

Patient: Ethan Frazer. Age: 14 months. Diagnosis: Severe Pyelonephritis, Urosepsis. Clinical Note: Delay in presentation directly contributed to critical state. Father knowingly departed for vacation despite 104.2°F fever.

"Is she insane?!" Diane snapped, snatching the papers from his hand. "She took the baby to the hospital for a little fever just to build a case against you? This is absurd! Call her right now!"

Mark pulled out his phone and dialed my number.

“The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

Panicking, Mark tried to log into his primary banking app to check his balance. An error message flashed across the screen in bright red text: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED. CONTACT LEGAL COMPLIANCE.

He tried his secondary account. ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.

He tried his corporate account, the one he used to transfer funds to Diane's shell company. ACCOUNT FROZEN.

"Mom," Mark gasped, his voice cracking with hysteria. "My accounts... everything is frozen. The bank blocked my cards."

Diane’s arrogant demeanor cracked for the first time. "What do you mean frozen? That's our money! I have fifty thousand dollars in that account for the condo down payment!"

Before Mark could answer, his phone buzzed with an incoming email notification. It was an automated court service notice, copied to his workplace email, his personal email, and his corporate legal team.

Attached was a forty-page forensic financial ledger prepared by Claire Frazer, CPA.

It detailed every illegal transfer, every altered tax document, every loan document bearing my forged signature, and a comprehensive map of Diane’s offshore shell company, complete with registration numbers and banking routing codes that Diane had assumed were completely invisible.

At the end of the email was a message from Rachel Sterling:

“Mr. Frazer. Your initial court hearing is scheduled for Monday at 9:00 AM. Do not attempt to contact my client directly. Any violation of the temporary restraining order will result in immediate arrest.”

Mark dropped his phone onto the table. The luxury vacation was over. The trap had closed.
