Chapter 10 - The Warmest Thanksgiving

The following November, the air turned crisp and golden once again, bringing with it the exact anniversary of the day that changed everything.

Instead of standing on a cold, unwelcoming porch holding an unwanted casserole dish, our home was warm, fragrant, and bursting with life.

The dining room table—though not quite twenty chairs long—was beautifully set with a polished ceramic platter of roasted turkey, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, and, of course, a steaming dish of green bean casserole that Ethan proudly helped prepare.

Our table was filled with laughter, great conversation, and genuine warmth. We weren't hosting country club acquaintances or distant relatives who only valued what we could provide. Instead, we were surrounded by our true chosen family: my closest friend from work, Sarah, her wonderful husband, and a few neighbors who had become like aunt and uncle figures to Ethan over the past year.

Ethan, now ten years old and growing taller by the day, stood at the head of the table holding a pitcher of sparkling cider. He looked sharp in a brand-new navy sweater—one he had picked out himself—completely comfortable in his own skin, smiling brightly as he poured drinks for our guests.

"Before we eat," Ethan announced proudly, tapping his water glass gently with a spoon just like he had seen me do at family dinners, "I want to propose a toast."

Everyone quieted, turning their warm, encouraging smiles toward him.

Ethan looked around the table, his eyes lingering on Sarah, our neighbors, and finally landing on me with absolute adoration.

"To my mom," Ethan said, raising his glass high. "Thank you for always making sure there’s plenty of room at our table, and for showing me that family is about love, not money."

My eyes welled with sudden, overwhelming tears of gratitude. I raised my glass back to him, my heart swelling to a size I never knew possible.

"To love, truth, and home," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady in the cozy dining room. "Cheers."

"Cheers!" everyone echoed in unison.

As we clinked our glasses together, the sound chimed purely and brightly through the room, echoing off the walls of a home built on strength, resilience, and unconditional love. We had finally arrived, and the door was wide open to a wonderful, beautiful forever.
