Chapter 5 - The Safe Haven

The underground parking garage of David’s office building was cool, concrete, and eerily quiet. The harsh overhead fluorescent lights hummed softly, casting a sterile white glare over the neat rows of parked sedans and SUVs.
I pulled my car into the designated visitor spot near the private elevator lobby and cut the engine. The sudden silence inside the cabin felt heavy.
Almost immediately, a side door near the stairwell clicked open, and David Vance stepped out, holding a thick manila folder under one arm and a warm paper cup of hot chocolate in his other hand. He walked over to our car as I unlocked the doors.
“Rough night?” David asked, offering a sympathetic smile as he peered into the window at Emily.
“The roughest,” I replied, opening my door and stepping out onto the cold concrete.
David leaned down and handed the cup of hot chocolate through the open window to Emily. “Here you go, kiddo. I know it’s been a nightmare of an evening, but you’re safe here. My office is upstairs, locked tighter than a bank vault, and the building security team is aware you’re both coming up.”
Emily took the cup with both hands, inhaling the sweet steam. “Thank you, Mr. Vance.”
“Call me David,” he said warmly, straightening up and turning to me. He pulled out a set of laminated parking passes and handed them over. “Officer Reyes called me right after you hung up. He and another unit intercepted Sarah about two blocks away from your house. She tried to claim she was just driving around looking for her daughter, but when they searched her car, they found copies of the clinic’s blank intake forms and a notebook practicing your signature.”
I let out a long breath I felt like I’d been holding for an hour. “They arrested her?”
“Detained for questioning, pending formal charges of forgery, identity theft, and medical tampering,” David confirmed, his expression grim. “They’re holding her overnight at the precinct. That gives us a window of about twelve hours to lock down every legal protection available before her arraignment tomorrow morning.”
We took the private elevator up to the fourth floor. David’s office was spacious, filled with towering bookshelves, warm mahogany furniture, and a massive mahogany desk littered with legal briefs and case files. He ushered us toward a comfortable leather seating area near a tall window overlooking the sparkling skyline of the city.
While Emily sipped her hot chocolate and settled into the plush sofa, David and I sat at his conference table to review the paperwork.
“Here is what we are going to do,” David said, spreading out several legal documents across the dark wood surface. “First, we file an emergency ex parte motion for temporary sole custody and a strict protection order, barring Sarah from any contact with Emily whatsoever. Second, we subpoena the complete medical records, security footage, and staff statements from the 4th Street clinic. If their intake staff accepted a forged signature and failed to verify ID properly, they are facing massive civil liability.”
“Will the clinic fight us?” I asked, scanning the draft of the motion.
“They won't have a choice once the state medical board and district attorney get involved,” David said firmly. “They bypassed standard verification protocols to push through a specialized procedure. That’s gross negligence.”
I signed the top three forms, my pen moving smoothly and cleanly across the lines—my actual signature, distinct and verifiable, a sharp contrast to the clumsy forgery Sarah had scrawled hours earlier.
Just as I finished the final page, my phone buzzed on the table. It wasn't Sarah this time. It was an incoming call from an unknown, blocked number.
David looked at the screen, his eyes narrowing. “Let it go to voicemail, or put it on speaker. It might be the clinic administrator or the detective on duty.”
I hit speakerphone and placed it in the center of the table.
“Ms. Cole?” a gruff, exhausted voice asked. “This is Detective Miller with the city police department. We need you and Emily to come down to the precinct tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. to give your formal, recorded statements. Also... you need to know something else about what was found in your sister’s possession.”

My heart skipped a beat. “What is it, Detective?”
“We found a financial ledger in Sarah’s purse,” the detective said heavily. “It looks like she wasn't just making medical decisions for Emily behind your back. She was attempting to liquidate a trust fund set up by your late parents—using forged guardianship papers and your stolen identity to do it.”
