Chapter 10 - A Future Full of Light

Five years later.

The kindergarten graduation ceremony was held in the school auditorium, balloons tied to the front row chairs, the air thick with the proud hum of parents holding cameras and bouquets of flowers.

I sat beside Kevin in the center row, holding a bright bouquet of yellow sunflowers—Brooklyn’s favorite. Next to me sat eleven-month-old Rosalie, who was toddling on sturdy little legs between our seats, clutching a stuffed bunny and babbling happily to anyone who would listen.

On stage, a row of children in oversized blue caps and gowns stood singing a cheerful end-of-year song.

Then eleven-year-old Brooklyn stepped up to the podium holding a small index card. She had grown so much over the past few years—tall, confident, and radiant with self-assurance.

She adjusted the microphone, scanned the crowded auditorium, and found our faces in the front row. Her face lit up with a bright, beautiful smile.

"For my final project," Brooklyn’s clear, confident voice projected through the speakers, "I wrote about my hero."

My chest tightened with a familiar, overwhelming swell of emotion. I reached out and squeezed Kevin’s hand.

"Some people think heroes are people in comic books who fly or save the world from monsters," Brooklyn continued, her eyes shining brightly. "But my hero is my mom. She taught me that being strong doesn't mean you never get scared. It means when things are dark and hard, you keep fighting for the people you love. She showed me that family isn't about who shares your blood—it's about who stands by you, who keeps you safe, and who loves you exactly as you are."

Tears blurred my vision, hot and bright, spilling over my eyelashes as the entire auditorium erupted into warm, thunderous applause.

Kevin pulled me close, resting his chin on my head as we watched our oldest daughter take a proud bow on stage, while our youngest baby giggled and clapped her little hands right beside us.

The past was behind us—buried in the quiet dark where it belonged. Ahead of us stretched a wide, open horizon, illuminated by the bright, unstoppable light of a family built on true, unbreakable love.
