Chapter 7 - The Final Severing

The hospital room was completely silent save for the steady beep of the heart monitor and the quiet, ragged sound of my mother weeping on the floor.
I stood there, looking down at Patricia. For decades, I had craved her approval. I had spent my childhood and young adult life modifying my behavior, biting my tongue, and swallowing my pride just to earn a crumb of the unconditional love she so freely showered upon Nicole. Every milestone I achieved—graduating nursing school, buying my first used car, raising Lily on my own—was met with a shrug or a reminder of how much more impressive Nicole’s accomplishments were.
And now, here she was. Broken, humiliated, kneeling at my feet, begging me to save the golden child from the consequences of her own malice.
"Stand up, Mom," I said quietly, my voice devoid of anger, carrying only a heavy, profound exhaustion.
Patricia looked up, her eyes wide with desperate hope, sniffling as she slowly pushed herself up from the linoleum, her knees aching. She smoothed down her wrinkled blouse, her hands still shaking. "Becca? Does that mean... will you sign the paper?"
"No," I said.
The word dropped into the room like a lead weight.
Patricia’s face drained of what little color it had left. Her jaw went slack. "What? No? Becca, you can't be serious! She's your sister! We're family!"
"Family?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh, stepping closer to her so she could see the absolute resolve in my eyes. "Is that what we are? When I was pregnant and alone, you called me a mistake. When I brought Lily into this world, you treated her like an afterthought. And yesterday, when Nicole poisoned my daughter and watched her collapse on the floor, you stood on the porch and cursed at me, calling me a bastard child while my child was dying."
"I was angry! I didn't know the extent of—" Patricia stammered, stepping back.
"No, Mom, you did know," I interrupted, my voice rising just enough to cut her off without waking Lily. "You knew exactly who Nicole was, and you protected her ego over my child's life. You have always protected her. Well, guess what? The bill has finally come due. I am a nurse. I take oaths to protect human life. And as a mother, my primary and absolute duty is to protect my daughter. If I let Nicole walk away from this without consequences, I am teaching Lily that her safety doesn't matter, that family abuse gets swept under the rug because of a shiny last name and a corporate job."
"She'll go to prison!" Patricia screamed in a panicked whisper, grabbing my forearm. "Your own sister will spend years behind bars! Have you no heart?"
"My heart is right over there," I said, pointing firmly toward Lily’s hospital bed. "Beating steadily because I got her here in time. If you want to talk about heart, talk to Nicole about why she thought a human life was worth a social media laugh."
Patricia stared at me, her chest heaving as the reality of my refusal settled over her like a heavy shroud. She realized, in that exact moment, that the emotional leverage she had held over me for thirty-two years was completely gone. I no longer needed her validation. I no longer feared her disapproval. I was free.
"You're a cold, unforgiving monster," Patricia spat out, her voice trembling with venom as her desperation curdled into bitter resentment. "Just like your father. You'll regret this, Becca. You'll burn every bridge you have, and when you have no one left, don't come crying to me."
"I haven't cried to you in ten years, Mom," I said steadily, walking over to the door and pulling it open. "And I certainly won't start today. Security is waiting outside. They can escort you out."
Patricia gave me one last look—a look filled with pure hatred and defeat—before turning on her heel and marching out of the room, her shoulders rigid with bitter pride.

As the door clicked shut behind her, I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. The battle with my past was finally over. But as I turned back toward Lily’s bed, I realized that a new chapter was just beginning—one where we finally got to write our own rules.
Little did I know, the legal system moved faster than I expected, and Nicole’s downfall was about to take a shocking, unexpected turn that would shake the entire family to its core.
